If my FO will discolor the soap to this shade of tan:

Will it change the color of a primary shade of red, blue, green or purple mica? I’m guessing that the amount of mica ppo will be important. Recommendations, anyone?

ETA: Mostly I’m looking for recommended mica amount per ppo. The discoloration is fairly light. If I can get a color that looks a little more intense than what I think it should be, is that likely to be sufficient? I do plan to let some of the soap discolor, but a higher percentage of the soap will be colored.

I just learned tonight that the size of the mica affects how it colors the soap. According to the Nuture website: “Lower micron micas will add more pigmentation than higher micron micas. The more glittery the mica is, the less color it will impart in a blend.”

A lot of people use vanilla color stabilizer to ensure bright colors in their soaps. You may want to try this.

did not know this!!!
if it was me I would try leaving out some soap to color for swirls that will work with the color it is supposed to wind up being. good luck

I know about the stabilizer but prefer not to use it. Thanks though.

Not going to work with my design plans...

Ive had good luck with adding mica to lower vanillin percentage scents and been able to keep the color. For white ive used non nano zinc oxide.
Thanks! When it comes to discoloring FOs I am still very much a newbie. I recently used an oatmeal stout FO that is 8% vanillin, but that soap also has unrefined Shea and cocoa powder. I checked the vanillin content for the new FO and it’s only 1%.

You'll probably have luck with the Micas then. 1% may darken a bit but with the mica added it may just deepen the color.

I did a Red Red swirl in Dragons Blood. That discolors to a dark brown.
If you look CLOSELY then you can see the swirl. But from a distance not really.
I will see if I can find a pic

Nope, don't have a pic of it anymore sorry

Yes, it will mute the colors somewhat. I would recommend the brightest colors possible to start. Neons will come through the discoloration better, although maybe not quite as neon as they started out. Here's a link to a photo of what a heavily discoloring FO (Dragon's Blood) will do to colorants. Personally, I love how it turned out (no neons were used in that soap, however.) I used green, blue and purple in that soap but the FO is a strong discolorant.

I did use neons in this soap, which with a slightly discoloring FO, came through really well.

Edit: to correct the second link.

I don’t scent a portion of the soap I’m going to color most times. I’ve done a few where I’ve scented the entire batch and added my colors and it did mute them quite a bit. It will depend on how much Vanilla is in the FO.

The soap is made, so time will tell. I’m keeping my fingers crossed. The FO is only 1% vanillin and I went heavy-ish on the micas.

I am to late to help, but I would have done what you did, by using a heavy touch with the mica. The worst that should happen is they darken some if the fo only has 1% vanilla, but should remain the original color. If I read this wrong and you used an 8% vanilla fo it will darken the colors. I also prefer and do not use a stabilizer, I just work with the discoloring fo.

I didn’t use the soap I made with the discoloring FO for the competition, so here it is. The FO is BB’s Lingonberry Spice. At 1% vanillin is didn’t discolor the soap very much at all. The slight tan discoloration can be seen in the “uncolored” portion of the soap. It seems lighter in color compared with the pic from the BB website that I posted above.
