I want to try a double pour. The recipe I have says to pour one layer and wait at least a week before pouring another. Soapmaking is teaching me the virtue of patience, but I'd really like to pour both layers today, if possible.

There's nothing exceptional about both layers, except they have honey in them. Is it possible to do a CP double pour in the same day?

I haven't done it, but from what I have read in other posts on here is that you can wait until gelled, spray with alcohol and pour your next lot in. I am sure somebody with actual practice of doing this will come forward and either agree with me - or corrrect me!

I make layered soap - smooth straight layers. I get everything out for both batches, make one and pour it, clean up those things (i.e., stick them in the garage till the next day), have a cup of coffee or go online for a few, then make the other and pour on top.

so I can easily do 2 layers in a day, or even in half a day.

Just make sure your soap has set up in the mold before you pour the second layer or you'll end up with an interesting pattern where the colors meet - which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Thanks, thanks, thanks. Didn't think I needed to wait a week to do a second pour. I'm aiming for contrasting texture--one side exfoliating and the other smooth.

Carebear, do you spray with alcohol before doing your second layer?

I don't spray between, but when I do layers I usually gel the soap. When I do layers, I just sperate one batch. I just stickblend the bottom layer for thicker trace, put it in the mold. Work with my second layer and by the time it is ready, the first layer is usually set up.
I did this layered soap with one pour, and I think my lines were pretty straight:

So on the other side of the question, How long is too long between layers? If one batch is too far along, do you run the risk of layers not properly bonding?

you need alcohol between layers of MP. it does nothing for CP

I believe you are right on the money when it comes to putting layers of fresh soap together .

In my experience making cp soap with older cp embeds in them ( I have made 30 + ) the only time I forgot to spritz with alcohol , it did not work . I have to believe the alcohol works in this kind of situation .

I make layers all the time. If I am doing a 2-layer, I split the batter at thin trace, do my coloring and fragrancing if different scents per layer. (for a fast moving scent I wait til just before I pour the layer to add it.) Then I bring the bottom to a thick trace, pour it in the mold and start picking up my dishes. Periodically I gently tap the poured layer with a plastic spoon. When it is fairly sturdy, usually within 20 minutes or so, I gently pour the next layer, using the back of the spoon as a 'break'. Never had a problem this way. Every once in a while I pour layer #2 a tad too soon and get a slight dip but that looks cool too. Never had separation of layers. Same method for a 3 layer, although usually I use an uncolored portion for the top layer, as manipulating color into the batter can move trace along, and when I'm ready for it I don't want it to be too thick to pour.
