Here is a problem i'm trying to solve. We pour our soap into the moods and put a lid on it to cover it so we can insulate it. Our problem is the soap raises a bit and touches the lid and messing up our pattern. Do I alter the recipe to have less oils in it so the mild has less liquid to solve this problem? I put some skewers over the top and put the lid on to try to stop it. No luck. What is your secret for this. Thanks

I prop up my lid with 4 balls of clay (one ball for each corner). Clay is versatile in that the balls can be made as big or as little as I want/need them to be in order for my lid to stay away from touching the surface of my soap. I just set a ball of clay on the ledge of each top edge corner of my mold and lay the lid on top of them. Then I drape over my propped/lidded mold with some old cloth diapers to block out any drafts.

I should mention that my lid is the kind that overlaps the outer edges of my mold. If you have the kind of lid that sits inside of the mold, then my trick won't work for you.

That's a brilliant idea, Irishlass!

I use silicone lined wood molds from Nurture Soap supplies. There is at least a half inch of head space between the liner edge and the top of the wood mold, thereby ensuring that textured tops don't get smushed.

Maybe I'm just underthinking this one, but I'd say just drop your oils by a few ounces to give it some room. My molds are 2 5/8 inches high, so I can pour a batch at 2 3/8 and still have play room for the tops.

I would say it would depend on the size of your mold and how wide you want the bars to turn out.

I had my husband cut strips of 3/4" particle board the length of the long sides of my molds. If I do a decorative top or a larger batch of soap, I lay those along the long sides then lay cardboard on top. I gently lay my towels over that. I also had him build me a rectangle out of scrap wood that's the dimension of my mold. I can set that on top, add cardboard, then my towels. Both work really well for me especially since it's all made out of scrap pieces we had laying about.

When I read the original post, I thought of this sort of thing!
