Can somebody help me out with the difference of an herbal and aromatherapy soap? In the organic world how many different type of soaps can their be? Sorry that my question might sound dumb, but I am new to soap making and I'm a little confused since my goal is to make soap without chemicals or other "nasties" and at the same time feel confident about which niche I am leaning more towards. I am so confused now that I don't even now if I am making any sense at all.

To me an herbal soap means one that either has dried herbs added or has used herb infused oil or liquid. An aromatherapy soap is one in which essential oils were added.

Lye is a chemical, of course, and labels like "natural" lack a clear definition. I agree that "aromatherapy" is connected to use of essential oils but it's not clear if those benefits survive saponification. Personally I would stick with "herbal" if you use herbs or herb-derived essential oils and then you're pretty safe.
