Hello there! My name is Mel, and I am new to all of this (soaping and forums). Six months ago, I had a serious allergic reation to chemicals in...something. The dermatologist could not narrow it down to a particular item. So, he sent me home with more chemicals, which made me very sick, which caused my visit to yet another doctor to cure something else. It seemed like a never-ending and vicious cycle. So began my enlightenment! I have begun a quest to rid my home of such things that might cause problems, and in doing so, realized I could make my own soap! My family is very excited.

Beware, I ask a lot of questions! I can't wait to get started.

Hello and welcome! :)

There's a lot of knowledgable people here that are friendly and willing to help. It's a good place.

I would also get familiar with the search functions on here....there's some great stuff archived, just waiting to be found.

So, I take you're interested in cold process or hot process (from scratch) soap, rather than melt and pour?

Very interested in cold process soaps. I have not read much about hot process, but I absolutely love how you said "from scratch." Isn't eveything better from scratch? :)

It depends...but I do tend to like things "from scratch" over commercially produced. For example.....I adore my own dish and laundry soap, but they don't really hold a candle to Dawn or Tide....I'm the first to admit that. :)

Hot process is basically cold process soap that you cook to get the extra water out of, and to finish the lye/oil reaction. It's convenient for a few difficult fragrance oils, or if you want instant gratification and want to try a bit of some of your soap immediately (although it still needs to cure to be its best).

Hi Mel and welcome! You are so going to love making your own soap.... and you are so going to get addicted! Which is a good thing ask any of the rest of us addicts.....

Hellooo

Saying hello from Aussi also.
Welcome Melrose.
Yes you are right on track.
Our medical system is well known for giving medications on top of medications adfinitum, then wondering why they have a green turning cross eyed patient in front of them. Not that I am bagging the whole Medical fraternity. I wouldn't want to have to do my own heart surgery, appendix removal, cast a broken bone etc.( Hoping I never need any of those any way.)
Yes it is true. There are soap addicts lurking amongst us. Then there is us others. One stage up. Soap crazy fanatics , way gone beyond even a hundred step rehabilitaion program. Identifiable by a permanatly ,dazed , blissed out look.

Too soap, soap and soap

Well MikeInPdx,
We could hold an annual rally. But we would probably be seen wandering right on past eash other ,bars of soap in our outstretched hands. Looking at them and admiring them, wondering everyso often , vaguely of course, very vaguely if maybe there was something we were there for as we mumbled our soap mantras.
