The newbie is back again! You've all been so amazingly helpful I can't keep myself from asking questions time and again. I'm watching videos of soap makers doing 'in the pot swirls'. I see their neat-o containers of color set aside and they even tell me what kind of coloring ie mica or liquid dyes their using sometimes but they're not telling me what it's mixed with?? Are they mixing with a bit of carrier oil and setting it aside them mixing it in at trace? Is it an ounce or so of water? Dazed and confused! Help me out soap gurus :)

It depends on the colorant! Some do better with oil, some do better with water. Most micas I've seen call for mixing with oil, the ultramarines I have do better with water, and you have to look at specific titanium dioxides for what they mix into (some go into water, others into oil).

I mix my micas with a small amount of oil & titanium dioxide with water- the smallest amount I can get away with & then add it in at trace.
