Hi!

I wanted to make some swirled colored soap today but the violet matte pigment powder I used turned brown, so I tried it again in another batch thinking it needed to be at thicker trace and it turned brown again...what did I do wrong?

Thanks!

Does you pigment state that it can be used for cp soapmaking?

It's not soap safe. It states its only good for cosmetics and that a high ph product will change the color. Try this: http://www.wholesalesuppliesplus.co...rafters+Choice™+Matte+Lavender+Pigment+Powder

Actually, it is soap safe (cosmetic grade is soap safe), but not stable in CP soap. You can use it in Melt & Pour if you want, though.

I know, their site is confusing a bit, because this pigment is in with the ultramarines and oxides that are stable in CP. It would be easy to miss that on this one.

what a pretty color, too bad not good in high-ph...here's some links for soap-safe colors...there's more out there but I get most here...it pays to read the fine print...join us at the sadder-but-wiser club!

the "neon" pigment powders have to be mixed in oil, let soak for awhile and stirred very well, but you get nice clear bright colors...you can also get them premixed but still shake the bottle well after each use...nice because they do not bleed or blur.

there is now a substitute for "pop" micas called rainbow micas...these are non-bleeding, too!:

Thank you so much for the help! I had actually bought a sample pack of oxides that I was told were soap safe (I messaged the website). The other oxides worked so I didn't know what I was doing wrong when I used this one. Will check out the other link, thanks for the info and I am definately a faithful member of the sadder-but-wiser club!!!

any time you have a question, just let us know (along with the link) we'll make sure you'll be okay...one other thing...I've tried using ultramarine lavender/purple and no matter how much I use, it turns out a kinda stormcloud bluish/gray...some have had good luck with other ultramarines, but I just pass on it since there are so many other colors available.

Sorry! That's what I meant. Not cp soap safe. :-D

It's really annoying that they put that color in the pigment & oxide sample pack. It should have a big label saying that it doesn't work in CP. It was also in the pigment sampler I got from TKB Trading. The label does say "not stable in CP", but it isn't very big and I just happened to recognize the color as Manganese Violet, so I knew. But it would be easy for a newbie to miss.

I would recommend newbies to read the ingredient labels for all their colorants and familiarize themselves with the different pigments, dyes, etc. It makes it easier to understand what the suppliers are selling and compare them.
