Hi guys,

Just wondering if you guys use cinnamon essential oil in your soap. I know it can be irritating. Have you ever had customers (or yourself) break out from it?

Also, which variety is safest on the skin - bark or leaf? Finally, how much to you use ppo? I want to do a patchouli spice bar.

Thanks!

I have not broken out, but cinnamon(cassia) can certainly irritate delicate skin. I notice it on my eyelids and other "tender" areas.

I would probably never have noticed, but I used nothing but cassia bark in a batch of soap at full strength. I probably would use no more that 0.2 oz/PPO in the future.

Cinnamon Leaf is the safest but even with that being said you should keep the percentage down to no more than 1%. Cinnamon Bark is a restricted oil with a maximum recommended use of 0.2%.

I've used Cassia Cinnamon in my Guinness soap recipe probably for about 2 years now. I've never found it irritating, neither has my husband or any of my friends. I can't recall what amount I use. I want to say its something like 0.5oz in a 27oz batch. OTOH, I have noticed that too much peppermint EO will leave a little tingle.

batty it is actually considered a sensitizer rather than a direct irritant. Mind you there are people who are going to be very sensitive to it and if you are selling then you need to be aware of it so customers are coming back complaining.
