Ugh! I’ve got DOS on my soaps!!! I made these soaps for soap shreds and they all have DOS. They don’t stink. Can I still use them for shreds?

They were made in December 2019 and the SF is 7%. If I can’t still use them what can I do with them?

I agree with obsidian and shunt. DOS spreads. Separate the batches from your good soap. Dig out any DOS you can see and use them as quickly as you can. Storing them in freezer Is a great idea if you have room and a compliant DH. My DH would have a fit if he saw soap in the freezer!

In future I’d drop your SF way down and start using ROE.

I have too much. What a loss! Just found out that I made 4 batches last week with Safflower Oil, HO that expired 6/2020. This is killing me! Money down the drain. So much money! I’m sick about it.
So sorry. I really would not give it away either (except to really close family with strict instructions).
Try putting ROE in your oils as soon as you get them.

Strict instructions? DOS won’t hurt them, will it? What about the soap I just made with oil that shows an expiration date of last month? I thought safflower oil, ho lasted longer? This really sucks.

No it won’t hurt them. It could get smelly over time. Kind of like crayons. I dig out the spots and use it for personal use. Always check the dates on the oils. And as stated if you add some roe to your liquid oils when you open them it helps a great deal.

No, dos won't hurt them. You just let them know if the bar starts to stink or turn orange all over, it needs to be tossed out.
Can I add ROE to my safflower now. I bought it in December 2019 and it says it expired 6/2020.

If I just opened oils are they still bad? Or do they go bad once exposed to air?

No it won't hurt them but it might turn them off handmade soap forever. It might be a stinky mess if they don't cut out the DOS and use the soap straight away.
People have posted some incredible photos of DOS here is one from the net:

You can't tell how long someone will keep a soap. Or where they are going to store it.
I've never used out of date oil because it's not worth it to me to do so. Oil can go off without being opened. I want to ensure, to the best of my ability, that my soap is long lasting.
I add ROE the day the oil arrives. I think it might be too late for your oil.
I wouldn't use the oil, I wouldn't give the soap away and if I'd sold it I'd recall it, but that is just me.

Honestly, the "best by" or "use by" date doesn't mean the oil needs to be tossed the day after the best-by date. Use your nose and common sense -- if it smells fine, it's fine to cook with and/or make soap from.

Also keep in mind that DOS -- spots of rancidity -- don't come from rancid fat. If the fat was rancid, it will affect the ENTIRE bar, not just spots on the bar. That's not happening here. DOS like what is on the OP's bars are triggered by spots of contamination, often metal.

Granted if there are a lot of flecks of contamination, the individual spots of DOS can eventually merge into a full blown case of overall rancidity. But most of the time, the spots are isolated like this.

If my soap has gone south, I grate it up after a couple of weeks and use it as floor soap. My Floors smell great and I feel avenged by saving on tile cleaner!
