Hello all!

I think I got a few things confused when I was first learning precautions for different types of soap making. I know after something comes into contact with lye, for example, you can't use it for anything else. (Please note, I don't make CP, only M&P plus a few other bath and body crafts.)

But I want to find out this info. I do melt and pour soaps, bath salts and occasionally some solid perfumes & massage bars. But if I have my containers in contact with these types of items, are they usable for any other purpose other than it's last purpose?

For example (And the main reason for my post) I have a double boiler that I've used for my solid perfumes and massage bars. I've used various butters (cocoa, shea & kokum) as well as a few oils (sweet almond, mainly), beeswax and finally fragrance oils in it. Is it now dedicated to that use? Or do I need to purchase another double boiler for my chocolate candy making this Christmas? (I really didn't think things through...I'm infamous for that.)

I also have some nice glass bowls I use to mix my bath salts and occasionally other crafts in them. (I've done bath bombs in them as well.) The same question on this, should they be dedicated now? Or are they free reign?

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated!

I don't think stainless steel or a good glass bowl will retain the scent used in it. I would boil water and put in a little baking soda to try and make sure the scent was gone from my double boiler. You can also fill your glass bowl with hot water and dissolve baking soda in it. Since these items were not used to dissolve lye, or mix cp soap, I would say it is OK to use them.

You can sterilize as described above. Or you can use a separate double boiler for your chocolate candy. Personally, I only use my double boiler/s for soap crafting.
As for bath bombs, bath salts, bath candy, lotion bars, etc. I would recommend using only those nice glass bowls and anything you purchase in the future [such as molds] should be used for your kitchen cosmetic creations. Also, you should keep them in a separate area/room and/or label them as being for cosmetic creations only.
Hope this helps!

I do something similar. I normally use the same pans and molds for all my cosmetic products, after a VERY, VERY thorough cleaning. I use a separate one for any food items, or i'll make one up on the stove using a pot filled with water and a glass bowl fitted on top. Stainless steel won't hold scent, but I do think it's good manufacturing practice to keep food and cosmetic separate.
