Just wanted to boast a little about a soap I made last week, that I call "Butter Bars"! The oils and fats I used (in no particular order):

Lard
Coconut Oil
Castor Oil
Soybean
Ghee

Ghee is shelf-stable butter that's big in Indian cooking. You get it by melting butter and removing all the milk solids that were in the butter.

I made it using the CPHP method. The only problem (if it was a problem) was that after letting it come to trace I put the lid on the crock pot and waited 30 minutes as described in the SMF Tutorial on CPHP; when I came back the entire mass had gelled.

I have these yogurt cups I use as molds. They hold about 5oz of soap and make a round bar that fits comfortably in my hand in the shower. The 1lb batch I made filled 4 cups and almost filled a fifth one. I experimented with scents on two of the cups and left the rest alone.

One week later, I popped out the almost-full one and took it with me into the shower. WOW! Smooth, creamy, and REALLY nice lather! The non-scented ones are starting to develop a slight butter scent. The scented two helped me decide on proportions to use in a future full batch.

Tomorrow, if I can make the time, I'm going to try to add some honey after trace, and see if I can make some "Hunny Buttr Bars"! Wish me luck.

not a problem - that's what the heat of the crock pot is supposed to accomplish.

regarding using ghee, I'd recommend giving your soaps a few months to see if they go rancid before putting too much money into them!

fun, though!
