Bugs in my Shea Butter! YUK

I kept noticing black spots in my soap batter' after picking a bigger piece out I realized it was a bug, so now I had to discover which butter it was? after close inspection after each butter & melted I realized it was my Shea Butter! needless to say I wont be buying my butter from that company again.

It is always best to purchase your supplies from reputable sources.

You can melt down your shea and filter it through some cheese cloth.

Shea is made by hand in rural villages. Its not unheard of to find bugs and bits of stuff in raw, unrefined.

I Just finished up a 10 pound block of unrefined Shea from soapers choice and had absolutely no issues with it. It had no funky smell, it was nice and clean and I would recommend them for future purchases. To echo what @Obsidian said though...it’s not unusual so make sure to strain it.

That's why I don't buy unrefined butters. They cost enough as it is without the ick factor, even though I would not be surprised and would probably even expect a little piece of straw (or more) every now and then. But, like Obsidian says, bugs happen.

I have had it happen quite often with unrefined shea. The shea I purchase comes from direct importers purchasing from villagers and you just never know what surprises you might find. The packaging is never too great either. I have even found chili peppers. When you pay 3.00-3.75 per lb with no shipping you learn to just strain it.
