My friend is pregnant with her first child and I want to make her a body butter and lotion bar to help with stretch mark prevention.

I want to make sure I give her stuff that's safe. I'm going to use natural cocoa butter for one of the lotion bars and then shea and mango for other stuff.

Should I avoid fragrances? I know they are skin safe and I have no problems using fragrances, but I want to make sure everything I give her is safe.

Any opinions? Thanks!

Milla, do you have a good recipe? I have one for lotion bars, but I was not impressed with it. I think the cocoa butter sounds great, I did not put colors in my lotion bars, I did add Vanilla Scent though and they smell really nice ;)

Cool. I was not going to use EOs, but maybe just some vanilla FO. I made some shaving cream with some vanilla and my husband keeps wanting to eat it. It looks just like frosting!!

I am not sure if my recipes are any good as I've never made a lotion bar or whipped butter!

Here's what I found for recipes to try:

Mommy's Tummy Massage Bar

5 oz cocoa butter
2 tsp sweet almond oil
2 tsp sweet orange essential oil

I made it as a trial and it melts very well on my stomach. I will leave out the essential oil and put it in a lotion stick. If I leave out the essential oil do you think it will change the recipe, should I add a little vanilla FO instead?

Shea Butter lotion bar

1 oz beeswax
1 oz shea butter
1 oz almond oil
Vanilla FO

I'm going to put this in a lotion stick too so that she can keep it in her purse.

Whipped Mango Butter

I was just reading that mango butter is great for preventing stretch marks.

If anybody has any tips for anything better please let me know! I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks!

Stretch marks are mostly genetically defined (if your mom had them you're likely to have them, and the darker your skin is, the less likely you are to get them); but keeping your skin moisturized and eating healthy and appropriate portions during your pregnancy both help.

When you're leaving out the 2 tbs of EO, replace them for your liquid oil of choice instead.

i used a vaseline consistency jar of vitamin E on my tummy for both pregnancies and got no stretch marks on my tummy at all until the last week of my second pregnancy. i got 3 or 4 little ones around my belly button. i went from a 24 inch waist before pregnancy to a 45 inch one when i got the stretch marks. i swear by vit E! i out grew pregnancy clothes i got so big and only 3 tiny stretch marks out of it!

genetics, my dear... I didn't use anything with either of my kids and I don't have a mark on me.

but a lot of women swear by just plain ole cocoa butter, so give her a lump. as she rubs it onto her belly and it melts it'll be cooling somehow too (so is mango) whereas shea feels warming as it melts.

I used loads of the stuff when I was pregnant....I looked like a roadmap after each one. (Playboy will be calling any day now ::eyeroll::)

Some common essential oils that are safe for application during pregnancy are Bergamot, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Geranium and Lemon.

Being pregnant myself I used chocolate fudge FO scented whipped shea body butter. I loved the smell, and the body butter was so much nicer then a lotion bar.

My favorite scent combo is Lavender/ Sweet orange as well... I made this in a goats milk soap and have used it most of the pregnancy. :( I recently ran out though.

I believe it is genetics too, 3 large babies and not one stretch mark. It was all baby too, I never had any extra weight to loose either . Genetics , metabolism or luck , I don't know.
