I made my first batch of HP soap today and I'm not happy. The reciipe was provided by a forum contributor and is fine. I checked with soap calc and it's correctly proportioned. I heated oils in a Crockpot on low and when completely melted I added Lye water. I used a stick belnder and the mixture came to trace ( consistency of pudding ) in about 10 minutes. In the next five minutes without any mixing it went to a mash potato consistency and then back to pudding. I continued to heat on low mixing with a silicone spatula every 15 minutes or so. After rising several times in the pot I mixed and tested PH which was about 9-10. I checked with ZAP test no problem. I then turned off the heat and stirred till the soap
s temperature dropped to about 170F. I then added and mixed Vanilla Fragrance oil. I then spooned into a lined wooden mold. The soap was like heavy mash potatoes and didn't really want to stick to itself. I can only assume the soap was not hot enough or I over cooked. In any event, I forced into the mold and compressed. I assume I'll have air pockets. Not happy about that but what is disturbing is the soap is " Blotchy " I though I mixed well but don't know. Aany help please. What did I do wro :?: ng?

yea, sounds like you overcooked it - or rather that it dried out and then as it cooled it didn't stick together.

be careful when stirring - either make sure you stir it often enough that the outer edges don't get drier/more cooked, or make sure to NOT stir that part in - they tend to be whiter and can make your soap blotchy. (like when making a white sauce, you don't want to scrape the bottom of the pot if you've scorched your milk, you know?)

also, you want to get it into the mold a little more quickly.

it takes practice.

i'm not fond of HP cuz it's harder than it seems it should be.

Thanks for the feedback. I agree looks like I over cooked it. I may try rebatching. Tomorrow ,I going to make the same recipe again, but do it Cold Process and be patient for 8 weeks. Thanks again
