Hi, I recently bought a black pigment colour. It said it was suitable for an opaque base. I used just a couple of drops in 2kg of base and it was thoroughly mixed in. Luckily I tried a bar first as the black is coming out and not just in the lather it runs down your arm, I looked like I been in the coal mines! Can anyone tell me where I went wrong please.

Thanks

I don't think you went wrong anywhere, it is hard (?impossible?) to get a truly black soap without the color running out. Use of activated charcoal may help a little but you are still likely to get some color run, even if the bubbles are white. My dark brown soaps (which are that color only because of the FO) make white bubbles but mess the shower badly with dark brown splashes.

Thank you for the reply. I think I will leave the black alone then! Am very disappointed with the company that sold it to me as they specifically said it was non-bleeding and suitable for opaque soap. Never mind.

Thanks again.

I've found that with most dark colors and MP it's much easier to use clear MP, add the color to that and then just add a little of your opaque base to that. Because otherwise to make a white base a dark color, you have to use a ton of colorant. Much more than the mp base can hold without bleeding.

Non bleeding just means it wont run into the other colors of the soap in case you make a swirl etc. The lather will usually always have a black tint when using this color in soap but you can minimize it several ways.... I make an orange Licorice soap and use cosmetic grade charcoal in a clear base(scented with Anise oil) and swirl it with an orange colored white base(scented with orange EO) and the lather always has a little black tint to it. I have even tried adding just a small amount of the charcoal and same thing. I think people don't mind b/c they are usually using the soap for the anti ache benefits that charcoal is thought to have. :)

What about black oxide? I made a pretty loaf with using black oxide with a clear base, but to be fair, I haven't used it yet.

Please don't use black oxide!!! I used it in my Rosemary and Peppermint soap and my dad just sent me an e-mail complaining that it stains the wash cloth and his very expensive face bowl! Just warning.
