Beer Soap WHY?

Can somebody, anybody tell Me what is the purpose of beer Soap....?

Great lather, and a nice base note for scent blends (residual hop and malt aroma). Some say it softens the skin, some use it in shampoo bars (good for hair too). It also has a bit of label appeal for guy soaps.

Interesting I never knew what the purpose was I've always seen and read about it but I'm not to particular about the smell or taste of beer period so I never thought to make it. Maybe I should try this and see if other people I know would like it.... Thank you for the info Green Soap

I don't like the smell or taste of beer either (or other alcohol), but the hops smells pretty nice in soap & like Green Soap said, there are some scents that blend really well with the aroma.


P.S. Don't tell anyone about my dislike for beer, I think I could be run out of Wisconsin for mentioning such a thing. :shh:

What fragrances or Scents, Go well with Beer Soap? Does the soap smell like beer when done completely with beer? Does adding beer mess with trace alot?

I love beer and I consider setting some aside for soap a great sacrifice. Worth it though, that lather is amazing.

It's really popular, I have to say. Great label appeal. Guys like it. I bought a beer FO from NG that smells dead on, and it sticks well, too. I have not found the resulting soap to be any nicer than soaps made with water, myself, however, so I mainly make it for those to whom it appeals. It's good soap, but it just isn't my thing.

I don't like beer either! But I was intrigued by the thought of the qualities it might add to the lather. And since I could get the homemade beer from my husbands coworker that was even more appealing to me. I just went and got out a bar to sniff. No beer smell at all, just the EOs I used. Honestly, the scents that you want to use depend on what kind of beer you use. One of my favorite beers to soap is Leinenkugel's Summer Shandy (Leinie's is local to our town, so locals love this soap), with that soap I go with citrus eo's, like orange, lemon & litsea cubeba.

For a stout, I'd go with fragrances like Oatmeal, Milk & Honey or something warm like that.


For beer soap, I always let the beer go flat. I boil mine for about 20 minutes (some people do it, some people don't), then I add mine to my water. Freeze it just until slushy & then add my lye to that.
I'm probably being over cautious with the boiling & freezing, but I haven't had a failed beer batch with it yet.

LOL I always get funny looks when someone offers me a beer and I tell them I'm not a fan of beer. My hubby doesn't like it either. We're so weird.

I treated the beer in a similar way to Genny. A pinch of salt so it went flat, along with a lot of stirring and warmed it on the stove just until it was starting to steam. After it cooled I froze it. When I added the lye I just took it easy.....added a little.....stir, stir, stir, then repeat. I didn't get any weird or strong odors because it didn't really heat up much above room temp because it started off frozen.

It really didn't seem to at all. Although my heart rate was probably well over average the whole time because I was worried it would. After all there was the beer, honey, cinnamon eo and the clove eo. I must chalk it up to the higher amount of olive oil and soaping at low temp.

Beside beer, can any hard liquors be used in soaps. Like the flavored vodkas or the tea lemonade premixed drinks?

I've used wine (I've found cheap wine to give better scent) & Mike's Hard Lemonade, but not vodka.

I've heard people say they tried (and failed) making soap with hard liquor. I assume it's the alcohol content or the sugar in the alcohol that makes it a fail.

Thank you all for your insight now I know the why in beer soap and gained extra knowledge to experiment with... and hopefully make a good batch soon might not happen on first try but who knows... I will post Pics when I make it...
