I made a Bastille type of soap yesterday that went all gloopy and snotty before I could even get it in to the mould. Below is my recipe, grateful if someone could let me know why

Olive Oil 375g
Coconut Oil 85g
Castor Oil. 40g

Water 105g
Yoghurt. 85g

Lye 65g

Green clay mixed with a tiny bit of water
Silk in lye water
1tblsp sugary water

26g Frangipani fragrance

Full water
8% SF

I realise that the Frangipani is a difficult fragrance as I have used it before, but this mixture is now sitting in the moulds and is a gelatinous mess. Very very soft and oily. No zap

Thank you

The only thin I can figure is your SF is too high. According to SoapCalc, you actually used a 9% SF and then raised it further by subbing in yogurt for some of your water

Obsidian, no because I made 2 other batches and they were fine. Definitely used lye

Hmlove. Yeah I did wonder if the SF was too high. Would you recommend the standard 5%. I have been soaping for a year and some days I feel like I am starting from scratch!!!

I've made a 50% OO soap with 20% SF before and it hardened just fine. Any chance the soap has separated? I would take a skewer and poke around the bottom, see if its firmed up more then the top.

ActuAlly tried taking it out of the individual silicone mould and it is gelatinous all the way through. Will take some photos and post them. It is the consistency of semi firm jelly (or jello)

So would you add a bit of water or already soft enough. Never rebatched before so all help appreciated

Oh my, something certainly went wrong. Are you sure you measured everything right? 9% SF shouldn't do that, I probably end up about there frequently as I don't figure in my milks etc. Not sure what else may have caused this.

I usually calculate my SF for the standard 5%, but it ends up being about 6% because I round down my lye by a gram (my scale doesn't weigh 0.1 of a gram). My SF is higher for my milk soaps because, like Susie, I don't figure the added fat. However, starting off wit a 9% SF and then adding more fat to a mainly soft oil recipe may have played a part in the result.

Also, your pictures made me think of one of my early soaps - coincidentally, it was also a Bastile. Is it possible that you perhaps incorrectly added too much oil? In my soap, I accidentally added a few ounces extra of oil and my soap behaved very similarly to yours. I wound up rebatching it and it eventually firmed up.

No, I wouldn't say that you need any extra water with the soap as soft as it is. I would only add more water if you decide to mix in more lye (obviously).

Is it store bought yoghurt? What kind of additives/ thickeners are in there? I don't know if anything would cause this gelatinous mess, just throwing it out there.

Thanks for all your help on this one. I will rebatch it tomorrow (it's late afternoon here 6.23) Will let you know how it turns out. Still very much a junior at this!!

Ingredients in yoghurt are milk, stabilisers, live cultures and preservatives. And actually have never used this brand before

I am going to agree that something other than superfat is wrong there. I have never seen a batch do that that was not made with KOH. I think I would double check every ingredient, and then make another batch. I am not even sure if I would try re-batching that.

If you do try to rebatch, you should not need water added. It looks way too soft now.

Yeah it really is bizarre. Definitely not KOH as that is stored in a different room. I really don't know what happened!! Going to try same recipe tomorrow with lower superfat and see what happens. Is it possible it could be too much clay, which has absorbed too much water. Just out on a limb here!! Added 1tblsp

This really really really should go in the ugly thread. A top contender !!!

What about the silk? Did you use that before without problem? Did you use the recommended amount? Just trying to see what we come up with as that's one very interesting outcome. Hoping you could figure it out.

Clay hasn't been a problem for me. I would say I use about that much in soap.
