I am starting to sell CP soap (the main part of my products) and want to add some lotions, etc to go with my soap products. I need alot more experience and knowledge before I even consider selling my own lotions, so I decided to use some pre-made bases. Can anyone suggest a good company that uses the LEAST amount of preservatives necessary? I'd like to find a base product that is as natural as possible while being safe. I did order some samples from New Directions, but was hoping for some advice. Any suggestions?

Hmmm..... I don't know if your question is possible to answer, and if it were, I don't know how one would go about obtaining the answer. Hopefully someone who knows more will chime in soon.

For what it's worth, every preservative comes with a maximum safe usage rate, and every good company worth their salt (I would hope) will use as much preservative as their testing results indicate is necessary for their formula to be safe to sell, but without going over the stated maximum usage rate.

I don't use bases since I make my own lotions and butters, but if it helps at all in gaining a true perspective, preservatives are the least of the least ingredients in lotion formulas. In my own formulas, only a tiny, minute amount is added, even when used at the maximum rate.

thanks so much for your reply, I completely understand what you are saying. I dont think I said correctly what I mean. I'm talking more about unecessary ingredients? If that makes sense.

I was hoping for some advice on a manufacturer I could order the base lotions, etc from. I did find Aquatech and ordered some samples as well as, New Directions. Maybe someone has ordered from them before? I would love some opinions on their products!

One day I will formulate my own, but I have a lonnnnng way to go to understand and make a great and safe product (at least lotions...lol)

What ingredients are you looking for in a lotion base?
Soapies-Supplies has a nice one and NGC has a nice Goat's Milk lotion. I've never tried aquatech's or NDA's, so I can't give you any advice on those.

well one thing I would be really interested in offering my customers is a gluten free lotion. NDA lists their lotions as gluten, SLS, and paraben free. That attracts me as a consumer and one who has a gluten intolerance. Even so, there is always the issue of cross contamination. I do need to call and find out if its certifiably gluten free or not.

I really need to spend some time really getting into all the ingredients and understanding what they bring to the lotion. I am gathering samples now to try them out, so I wanted to ask you experts!
