well.... it depends what went wrong...

an easy way to test if your batch still has active lye is by doing a tongue test by either licking your finger and then soap, or the soap directly and seeing if it gives you a zap feeling, if it does...lye heavy--- rebatch time...

other than that, it would probably be apparent, there are a million things that can go wrong.

Thanks for replying!

Well, I made a batch using spearmint EO and dried mint leaves and the batch is brown, I used olive, safflower, coconut, shea butter, castor and milk.......

As I stated before I am a newbie to this, so not sure if it should be brown.

Yes, your batch will probably have at least brown mint leaves in it. The lye monster takes everything it can and turns it brown. There is no magic to preventing it, either. Good luck with your batch.

do you have a pic??

As far as adding herbs, did you grind, crush, or just add loose-leaf???

Any herbs added to soap (because of lye) will usually turn brown... so that might be the case, this doesnt mean they are bad, its just that lye ruins all the pretty colors :(

And the milk will cause it to go tan if it gets hot...

which happens because the sugars in the milk caramelize, you can prevent this by mixing your lye and milk in an ice bath to keep the temps down, or by not adding liquid milk, instead use water as your liquid and then dehydrated milk powder at trace at the rate of 2tbsp ppo :)

Also what I do when using milk is mix 1/2 liq as water w/lye. Than after it cools down some i add semifrozen milk it helps keep everything from getting so brown.

I do milk at 100% of liquid and I freeze it into cubes then add my lye slowly and mixing well. This helps keep the milk from burning....plus I soap my oils at room temperature again to keep the temps down....works like a charm...

I am gonna make some goats milk soap tomorrow, so I will try freezing, thanks so much ladies! Can't wait to see the turn out!
