Has anybody used Candy Cane FO from BA? I got my Trial by Fire in and wanted to make some candy cane soaps. I went to the site to check usage rate before I start. I dont know if i would have purchased it knowing my history of not being able to control acceleration.

Usage rate 1-5%
vanilla content 5%

There are no reviews on the site for it, so i figured surely somebody here has used it. I plan on using my lard recipe:

50% lard
25% olive
20% coconut
5% castor

looking for experiences.

I haven't used theirs specifically but I've used peppermint type FO's with no issue with acceleration. However, they do discolor if they have vanilla in them.

Your recipe is similar to one of mine and I have no problem with it accelerating.

I think I got my recipe from you LOL. I guess I am confused. I thought the vanilla caused acceleration.

Vanilla causes discoloration, usually some form of brown (hence Vanilla Stabilizer to stabilize the color). Acceleration has a whole other list of culprits, but I haven't seen many CP peppermint fragrances known to accelerate. Terrible acceleration is usually the realm of cinnamon/clove/pine/spices and floral/airy/ocean (not every FO with these accelerates, but the worst accelerators are usually in these categories). Herbals (peppermint/rosemary/ginger/tea) are usually less likely to accelerate, and seem to be less terrible if they do.
If you're struggling with trace and still want to do fun swirls, measure your FO and disperse your colors ahead of time. Then just emulsify slowly, split early, get close to emulsion with the colorants, and mix in the FO to get past emulsion. That way you'll have all your ingredients mixed with all the levels of trace at your disposal.

Candy Cane Fo's smell wonderful but are brutal if you want a nice red and white candy cane design. B&B does have a Candy Cane FO that does not discolor and if I remember correctly it soaps without acceleration but I do not remember liking it. You would need to test it first. I have never found vanilla to cause acceleration, but do find 5% vanilla to cause dark discoloration.

thanks guys. i am going to try a small test batch and see how it goes. I dont want to ruin my soap with brown peppermint. Unless I can make it a coffee peppermint LOL. But I don't have a coffee fo.
