Hello All,

I'm developing a recipe to use avocado oil in. I 'd be making a 4lb loaf. 5% superfat. Here's what I developed: Thoughts and comments welcomed.

olive oil 15%
palm oil 27%
coconut oil 30%
avocado oil 25%
shea's butter 3%
French green clay for coloring

Thanks for your help.

Tom

Last night as I lay in bed gazing at the stars, the moon and the universe I said to myself "Where the heck is my roof?".

It really comes down to what you prefer for your skin. I have dry skin so I'd find the recipe too drying because of the 30% CO and the lower percentage of olive. I would use a higher SF if I was making a similar recipe but this is just personal preference. Male members of my family would probably like soap since they don't care for the soap I make which has a lot of conditioning oils in them. I do have a recipe in which I use 30% CO for them.

I've never used avocado over 15% so it will be interesting to hear how it turns out. The only other concern I'd have would be rancidity. But avocado and olive supposedly have the same shelf life so I don't think this would be an issue.

I've never used more than 15% avocado also, so not sure how 25% will feel. It is VERY moisterizing so 5-10% works for me.

Sounds nice.. and Avocado is one with hig[FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]h unsaponifiables so I too am curious how that would balance out that high of CO. Your cleansing is kinda high but I think that could be off since avocado is so rich at that amount. idk. Kinda like 100% coconut oil with 20% superfat looks bad but people love.

I think I'll reduce the percentage of avocado oil and up the olive oil the same percentage. Thanks for the input. What would be a good scent to use? Some type of citrus?

Why do you want to reduce the avocado? As jenneelk mentioned, it's high in unsaponifiables which might balance out the cleansing. It might turn out to be a lovely soap.

I like citrus scents. A herbal scent would be nice, too. JMO

I wouldn't reduce the avocado. I also agree that an herbal or green type of scent would be lovely.

I love avocado oil in my soap. I generally use 20-25% but I too usually keep my Coconut to 25 or below. I would try your recipe to see how you like it. That's all part of making soap to try different things to see what you like best. I too like citrus and herbals or citrus herbal blends.

I have used as much as 1/3 avocado oil, and the advice I have is to discount the water a bit since it took forever to harden and cure for me. However, I had also used avocado pulp and perhaps this affected the hardness and cure time.

Your recipe looks fine to me, not too much avocado so your hardness and cure time should be fine.

I used a little indigo in my lye water to get a green, very much like avocado green (the pulp contributed the yellow/tan). I left some unscented and scented one batch with lemon and another with lime margarita.

litsea cubeba is a wonderful lemon/herbal e/o and rather inexpensive, lemongrass e/o or lemon verbena f/o would go nicely, too.

I would also consider making only 1 pound at a time since you are experimenting with this recipe.
