I know a lot of soapers use vitE, ROE, and the like as antioxidants in soap, but out of curiosity has anyone ever tried using Ascorbic acid powder ? Basically vitC powder ?

jbarad, it's funny you should ask that question, I walked into the feed shed last night , looked at the vit c powder and thought the same thing. I'm wondering what would be the benefits of it.

If nothing else it should help in the battle against DOS it's antioxidant properties should be good for that, just like ROE, vitamin E, etc.

I've never used it and I can't recall ever seeing it either, so I'm curious...is it grainy ? Or is it a very soft powder like say flour ? Does it turn color when mixed with water ?

the vitamin c powder we use for our goats has a consitency of powdered wheatgerm not soft like flour but not coarse like sugar, nor does it change colour when water is added. If you like I would be happy to take a pic of it for you.

No that's ok I get the picture :) doing some reading though and it apparently isn't all that helpful in the DOS prevention department. Ah well, it was certainly worth a shot :)

OT here-I have heard about Vit-C for goats and horses (have both), but did not follow through as to why it is used. I know some people use it to get them to drink their water, but I was unable to find it at the local feed store. Any other benefits?

Sorry for the OT!

I wonder if Vitamin C powder would help lather? Sugar is acidic and helps, although I've never really looked into why it works. You'd have to make sure it was the plain ascorbic acid. Many of the Vitamin C powders have a form of calcium added as a buffering agent (very bitter).

OT, sometimes I'll make sort of a lemon tasting drink using vitamin C powder and honey mixed with water. Good for colds.

I dunno since ascorbic acid is an acid - wouldn't it when dissolved with the water react with the lye (base)?

You'd be changing the pH of the soap for sure, and I don't think an acidic soap lathers - so maybe just add a controlled amount until the pH is where you want it? I thought something similar in adding it to shampoo or a shampoo bar to make it less harsh, but haven't tried it yet -- let us know how it goes please!
