With my never ending obsession with FO/EOs, I've been thinking of simply ordering a series of basic FOs (allspice, cinnamon, apple, vanilla, etc.) and creating my own blends, mostly for fall and winter type fragrances. Obviously this is what people do when they use EOs exclusively, but I'm wondering how many out there that venture into FOs create their own blends vs. just buying pre-made blends/scents? FOs have a bit more range to them than EOs due to price and toxicity, which is why I'm looking into this not so novel idea.

Hi Chris,

I love to blend and I have quite the collection to work with! I secretly think why we soap is all about the smell. When I have a less potent smell with a good base I'll blend it with something appropriate: wood smells with spice smells, for example. I'm pretty sure there are many of us out there who do this. Only two slight warnings- results may be great or less than expected & mixes may seize so be ready-no vendor notes to draw from here.

Some suppliers will make comments in their product notes regarding the item being a "good blender," meaning use it with another fragrance to your liking. A commonly used blender FO is citrus- orange, lime, grapefruit, since for CP soaps, staying power is much better with citrus FO's & it is typically a good match to the real thing. Regarding citrus eo's -their low flash point is the problem, typically <140F and we soap near this temp or the gel stage gets near there & most of the scent "burns off." Regardless, unless you use a lot and/or have a very good nose and are happy with a delicate citrus scent, the FO yields a better bar and typically will not seize. I blend lily fo with a pinch of orange fo then add bergamot/coriander eo's for a smell that I love. It has been requested by many. So - you can also combine an eo with an fo as well.

Good luck and have fun!

Julie

Chris the only custom blending that I've tried with FO is mixing an amber FO with a floral FO to give it more 'depth' (if that makes sense). It came out nice since the floral FO was too sweet for my taste. But I bet there is a lot of different blending that you could do to customize to what you want.

I blend many of my own fragrances... they're listed in a seperate category as my signature blends, a "Sherri's Original".

A large majority of my scents are blended :) You can get some amazing smells by playing with FO and EO combos! You can also end up with some strange smells, too, if you don't really think it out, lol! Like Julie said, be ready to experience some acceleration and even ricing...maybe it's how all the different fragrances combine chemically, but I seem to have more of these issues with my FO blends than when I use them straight.
