i use essential oils and need to know what would be good in pet shampoo, also i have heard castor oil is good.
thanks

In one of Catherine Failor's books, she mentions using citronella, tea tree oil, spearmint and a few other essential oils. Dill and garlic are also insect repellents. The safety of lavender in pet products is debatable!

There's a great book out called Holistic Aromatherapy for Animals: A Comprehensive Guide to the Use of Essential Oils & Hydrosols with Animals by Kristen Leigh Bell. If you have a good library, you could probably get it there. In it she discusses using essential oils for dogs and there were a lot that's safe to use on dogs. She also discusses dilutions.

I know this doesn't help at this time but I made a flea spritz from EOs I chose from her book and they were citronella, clary sage, peppermint and lemon. There is a lot more than that but I had these EOs. Also apple cider vinegar which is good for the dog's skin. She also mentioned using sulfated castor oil but I didn't have any.

I looked around and I guess I never wrote down the amounts because I can't find a recipe for the spritz I made. (Looks like I'm going to have to be making a trip to the library soon. ) Anyway, I really recommend this book if you're interested in using EOs on dogs.

pet shampoos are designed to match the pH of your pet's skin. hand made soaps are very alkaline. we have data showing that human skin can recreate its acid mantle very quickly but I don't know that is the case with dogs.

i personally wouldn't mess.

and lavender is toxic to cats.

My recipe is:
OO 30%
CO 25%
PO 15%
Jojoba Oil 10%
Shea Butter 10%
Castor Oil 10%
Citronella, lemongrass, tea tree, rosemary EO blend
colloidial oatmeal - great for calming irritated skin

My miniature schnauzer had bad allergies but since I've been using this on him he doesn't lick his paws nearly as much. Great lather and smells good too. I don't use as much EOs in this bar as I would for people. I want to use it on me! lol

Thanks for this recipe! I have a pit bull and she is terrible terrible terrible with licking and rubbiing herself raw! I will make this for her. This is for CP bar soap, correct? Can I make it in liquid like a shampoo? Also is 'PO' Palm Oil?

I'm new and have yet to make my first batch - learnign all I can. THANKS!

This is CP. I don't make liquid soap so I'm not sure about that. The lather is really great. I just rub the bar on the wet dog and get tons of lather.
I would make several batches for you though before you make one for the doggie. Just so you get familiar with technique, lye etc. Be sure to do a zap test especially if it is for puppy. :D I've been making soap for 3 years before I felt comfortable enough to use on my dog. I did a small patch test on my dog first to be safe (used it on me first lol)
