Hi all. I have been working with recipes found and double-checked through the MMS or SoapCalc lye calcs. However, I have no real "base" soap to use as my standard. I think it's time I create or find a good base to go from instead of all this tinkering with varying recipes. The tinkering comes with lots of practice using a standard, right?

That said, do either of these sound like a good bar of soap?

Scenario #1
Hardness: 59
Cleansing: 34
Condition: 35
Bubbly Lather: 38
Creamy Lather: 29
Iodine: 36
INS: 163

Castor Oil: 5%
Mango Butter: 5%
Palm Oil: 35%
Palm Kernel: 55%

Water as 38% of oils
Water: Lye ratio= 2.56:1

I want a hard bar that will last but not be caustic on the skin. I also am not a huge fan of lots of olive oil (smell and discoloration of bars).

Scenario #2

Hardness: 53
Cleansing: 26
Condition: 32
Bubbly Lather: 26
Creamy Lather: 28
Iodine: 42
INS: 168

Coconut Oil: 20%
Mango Butter: 20%
Palm Oil: 20%
Palm Kernel: 20%
Olive: 20%

Water as 38% of oils
Water: Lye ratio= 2.64:1

Each recipe is superfatted to 7%

I know I could just get a standard recipe, but this is part of the fun, right?

Thanks! Jen

Sorry to rain on your parade but I think both senarios need tweeking, the cleansing is too high and conditioning too low. Can't remember where I saw this but I copied it for future reference
Summary of values:
Hardness 36 to50
Cleansing 14 to 22
Conditioning 45 to 80
Bubbly lather 14 to 33
Creamy lather 16 to 35

These ranges should give you a good bar of soap

I did a little tweaking to your second recipe & these numbers get you a little closer to where you need to be, working with the ingredients you've got on hand:

Hardness: 47
Cleansing: 22
Conditioning: 49
Bubbly: 31
Creamy: 33
Iodine: 48
INS: 158

Recipe proportions
15% Coconut oil
15% Mango butter
20% Palm
20% Palm kernel
20% Olive
10% Castor

This recipe will still be high on the cleansing so you may want to further adjust the amt of cleansing oils such as palm, pko, coconut, and add some more conditioning oils to the mix so that you're not having to use so much mango butter (although I do love mango in soap!). Since you don't like olive, you could always add in some avocado, soybean, lard, hemp, etc. Have fun!

I say go back to soap calc, or go with the above suggestion....the cleansing vs conditioning would make my personal skin fall off....because I've made a soap similar to that before!
