I am thinking about using honey in my cp soap. I have looked around this site and I plan to add 1T ppo to my cooled lye water. I am just not too sure how cool the lye water should be? any thoughts? Thanks in advance-
Barb

um. i wouldnt add it to your lye water add it to your soap when you reach a lite trace. if you want to do a water discount to make up for the honey that your using that would work.
But ive only been making soap for 7 months now. If you want to wait for a more experienced soaper then you can. but adding something so thick and sugary straight into the lye solution would make me really nervous.

It might be fine to add it to the lye - I really don't know. I add it at trace but first I disperse the honey in warm water. I'm so not positive about the amount to use, but some of the pros here have said in the past to use 1/2 ounce honey PPO so that's what I do. Works great. I love my honey yogurt soap - the lather is just awesome.

Add your honey at trace at about 15g (1/2oz) PPO with no water discount and mix in really well. I put mine in the frig so it won't overheat.

The honey that I want to use is raw honey does that matter?

Raw Honey is honey that is not pasteurized. So since your soap is going through chemical change anyway, you should be just fine! Unless you have a honey allergy, then I would think you would have a problem!

I find that if I add it to my warmed oils first and emusify it with my stick blender then it gets better incorperated this way in the final bar. I
have added it at trace before and it left like tiny little visible globs through the whole bar. I have added before and after pics as a comparison. The first bar was "milk n honey" and I added the honey at trace. The second bar was made with the same recipe (minus coloring) and the only difference was that I added honey in with my warmed oils. As you can see, the second bar is much more smooth. I dont know if a smooth bar even matters to you but thats just something Id like to pass along ;)

I made honey/beeswax soap Saturday night and left it in the fridge since. I am hopeful to unmold it tonight and slice. I added my honey at trace, but it was pretty crystallized so I popped it in the microwave to make it thin and manageable.

thanks r+r- yes I would like a smooth bar. I will keep that in mind. I read somewhere here to put it in the cooled lye- That sounds interesting but not sure how cool it should be. Love the photos!

Im a weirdo about adding anything to my lye solution I guess. i've just thrown everything in with my oils, whether it be additives, milk or scents. Ive added things to lye before with some unexpected results so now i just go with what I know works for me

I make milk and honey soap. I use 1 TBS honey ppo and mix with a LITTLE water just to make it pour easily. After I have combined the oils and lye/milk mixture I stir with a spoon to blend. At this point I add my honey as I stir with a spoon. Now I crack out the SB and go at it! I don't chill my molds, as I love the rich, natural color of the soap.
