i was adding avocado oil to my melted oils and the scale had a mind of its own and i added too much avocado oil. do you all wait until the melted oils cool a bit before you add the liquid oil. i think it might have been to warm and the scale did not register it right away. Soapcalc is not opening for me either and i cannot figure out how to fix this problem in terms of the lye. help!!!!!

Go to Majestic Mountain Sage's lye calc. That'll get you the lye amount you need. And you can add the solid and liquid oils at any temp.
good luck!

Here's another lye calculator:

I have had that problem with my scale on occasion. I tare out the pan and start adding oil- no response from the display-like it doesn't recognize that you are trying weigh something- Hello!- then all of a sudden, it wakes up and you have too much! have a good scale, too. I think it works better to weigh the oils into their own container, instead of putting the pan on the scale & adding to already weighed ingredients. Hope the lye calculator works.

I agree with bombus about weighing the oils in a separate container ,not in the soap pot. If you use a separate container , you can tick off the oils you added as you go , if something happens , scale konks out, ,disaster strikes, etc. You always know where you are at. Just my 2 cents..

I weigh everything out right up front into 2 separate containers (one for the liquid oils, one for the hard fats).

First, I weigh out all my hard fats searately, like kitn does, and then put them on the stove into my stainless steel heating pot (which also doubles as my soaping pot).

And then I weigh out all my liquid oils separately in the same manner as above and place them all together in another container, setting them aside as my hard fats melt.

When my hard fats are all melted, I take my pre-measured liquid oils and add them all in one fell swoop into the melted oils.

thanks for the advice. i think i might measure out all of my liquid oils separately from now on. i actully think my problem was the size of the pot. i use a 12 qt. pot and i try to place the pot slightly back on the scale so i can read the display. i think the pot might have been too far back and was not accurately registering the weight. i was almost exactly over in weight what i was about to add from another oil, so i eliminated that oil and luckily the lye was just about right. i'll keep my fingers crossed and see how it comes out.
