anyone used this for color? i just tried it out because i was hoping for a pinkish color and it is pink. it turned a grey/brown in the mix. i then tried to swirl it but it was too thick so i think i got glops instead. i am hoping that it still looks pretty since my scent went right out the window. it was supposed to be a mix of rose, jasmine, ylang ylang and a touch of vetiver. it smelled really pretty in the jar i mixed it in but i think i put it in while it was too hot.

i also soaped with lye 140* and oils 120* because i have to try out (for myself) sygrids way of doing it. we will see tomorrow if it is pretty or if any smell is left. lol

I am very perplexed about color morphing right now. I used labcolors to make a pink , pink sugar scented soap , it was a beautiful pink , it morphed to breastfed baby poop green, WTH happened ?

lol! you got me! i like the morph that is going on with my lemongrass one. it is turning a very plantishly dark green. the scent goes well with it too. i hope my acai powder does the same but who knows?!

Your lemongrass morph sounds good . I am hoping mine might go brown or something other than the hideous green.

:? Isn't acai powder way to overpriced to use as a colorant? I thought of sprinkeling some on top of some fresh soap, as an additive....

i can buy it as small as a teaspoon at a time. i think i paid 30 cents for a small baggie of it. it didn't work as a colorant for what i wanted though. it isn't pink at all. oh well. now i know better...

here are the pics...sorry they are small, i took them with my phone

the darker is the part that is colored with acai powder

The answer is that most herbal colors in the red-to-blue range are very pH-sensitive and will change when they hit the lye. The only reliable, non-morphing pink I know of is madder root, which can be added directly to the lye water. I use alkanet quite a bit, but it has taken me a long time to more or less be able to control the color I get with it. I've had batches that went from red to green when I added the lye water to the pot, then proceeded through teal, yellow even, before finally ending up purple which was what I hoped for.

I haven't figured out how to insert pics at this forum yet, otherwise I'd post some photos of some spectacular color morphs using alkanet.
