About essential oil

Hello,

I was wondering about a combination of sweet orange oil and lavender oil. What is a good ratio of these oils and how much in % should one use in a soap recipe?

Hey, @soapman5, are you making cold process soap? Many citruses essential oil scents do not last very long. I've had great success using Orange 10X instead along with some litsea cubeba.

Yes, CP! I thought that lemon was not long lasting. Didn't know that sweet orange oil also were short lasting. Litsea cubeba seems a bit expensive, I'll see if I find a cheaper source.

for scents that fade fast, you should look into "anchoring" them in your soap.
I've used dried lemon peel and cornstarch with good success.

Also check out this video on creating scents. (she talks funny... she might be from New York City!)


Basically, you place a drop or two of the scents you want to use on cotton balls, then put them in a container - let them sit and merger before sniffing. It's mostly trial and error. But if you need 3 drops of one and one drop of the other - then you know the ration is 3:1.
Also investigate how people blend -- EOs produce top notes, middle notes and base notes.
You typically don't want too many EOs that deliver the same notes.
