A Castle type liquid soap experiment (lot of pix)

well a few weeks ago I was asked to creat an all natural tooth paste.
after much research and studying came up with plan of action.
first however I would need to creat a neutral tasting liquid soap, for the soap base in the paste.
seemed everyone here agreed that OO and Cocoabutter make a neutral "toothsoap bar" soap.
so why not liquid.
heres the top secret experimental recipe
OO 34 ozs
Cocoa butter 2 ozs (wished to stay light on this)
KOH6.5 ozs-- even though evry thing says shouldnt supper fat, stuck with the sf level of 5 from mms lye calc, want to stay on safe side.
Water 14 ozs for lye

and refrencing Making Natural Liquid Soaps book by Catherine Failor.
heated oils, mixed lye, proceded with basic CPHP
after 6 hours of cooking and stiring (due to the soft OO oil) finally reached the translucent gel paste state, should have got a picture but was exhausted and went to bed.

day 2.
time to start the dilution process.
ok going buy what I "thought" to understand, lol
says soft oil such as OO should be a 20% true soap base to water mix ratio.....ok.....weight of oils and lye = true soap weight......umm.....ok...
sooooo
I have 2 lbs of soap paste basicaly
I decide to go with a 33% true soap mix for a slight thicker concentration....I think..
ok...with that in mind I start with 2lbs true soap paste + 4 lbs boiling water for total wieght of 6 lbs
this is where I will bring you in with photos

WOW still a paste? wth? lol
ok...2 more lbs of boiling water

hmm...another lb of boiling water

hmmm...another lb of water...
...and in this glob of greenish amber we found a masquito with the dna of a Saponifisaurus....lol

moving to bucket and another lb of water

yes another lb of water and a few hours of waiting for bubbles to settle

still veary thick, but deciding to wait a couple days before moving on, let it settle an see how it looks.

thats the original 34 ozs OO bottle
still have over 2 gals in bucket
sure is ALOT of soap from just 34 ozs OO an 2 ozs Cocoa butter
I will post more as it moves through Sequestering, neutralizing and thickening(if needed)

Ok, time for an update.
Our liquid soap to tooth paste experiment is well on its way.....
first off after making the liquid soap I supper diluted some it will be the jug on left of picture below.
after Sequestering both for a bit this is what we have...
the concentrate is , well about the same
the supper diluited is veary Sequestered well

ok so we are ready to procede somewhat
so going by what I have read, cough cough
I prepare a 30% borax solution to neutralize and thickin the Sequestered soaps( going for close to gel if possable )
have to boil the crud out of it to get a good disolve
so I add 1oz per pound to the clear liquid an boil then cool
still veary thin but soapy
has to pass the taste test
yuck bitter, set it aside and move forward
take 4 ozs of concentrate (bottle on right in above shot)
add a couple spoons of neutralized clear mix
this is where it gets odd, funny but good
I created soap yak, if any one remembers yak, the slimy putty kids use to play with an make rude noises.

This stuff is supper thick gooy, rubbery stuff ....soap
not gel though, more like......well snot soap...parden
best out right discription sorry

had to pass the test...
spoon of it, kept it in me mouth a good while
taste? a perfect blan neutral slightly olive taste with mild lather
awsome

Now to mix with the dry goods
baking soda, corn starch, sea salt(not dead seas)
oh an some mint an touch of peroxide
mostly to taste,

omg, this stuff...looks...sniff sniff...and smells like the real thing
cleans the teeth? 100% A+ I gave it lol, no not creater being partial

although, we all agree here that its like being smaked in the mouth by a wave at the beach due to the salt with a minty after kick.
I personaly like it an 2 out of 4 do also
next batch will be with much smaller amount of salt or perhaps none

I have had a big bottle of liquid soap (my first and only attempt with KOH) sitting around for ............um................years.

I am going to try to make some toothpaste now, rather than using the mix of salt and bicarb which we normally use.

yep and already thinking up flavors for it
chocomint, coconutmint, citrismint, bubblegum mint, rootbeer
doublemint with spear/pepper mints ect...flavors are limitles possablities
can make large batch, store in air tight container and flavor just small batchs out of it, so out of say 10lbs of paste I could knock off 20 or more diffrent flavored batchs, depending on size of batchs

That's a lot of soap. Since you will be using it diluted with water as a tooth soap, do you need to add a food safe preservative?

hmm, good question, since it is my first time playing with liquide soap or toothsoap/paste, not realy sure ......yet

however, just the word "preservative" is a dirty word to me.
lets me explane
the first thought that pops in mind at the mention of preservatives is..
eww gross a comercial chemical...
although that might seem a tad narrow minded to some
one reason I started soaping my own soap was to get away from "comercial chemicals"
skin doc said find some all natural soap, I couldnt so I made it.

aside from that
I have been making my own soaps for a couple years now with what I view as a great success.
I keep a few samples of each soap I have made set aside to see how they do in time.
I have a few that are well over 2 years old now, rock hard and awsome.
Knock on wood, knock knock knock knock
so far NO dos, thank god lol

as far as natural preservatives, theres always salts, sugars ect
not sure if baking soda or corn startch would need any preservative
so that only leaves the oils used to make the soap
once oil is transformed into soap it is now a type of ....salt
so say the great science minds, or at least the books ive read on it, which are a few.
so far all that I have read up on liquide soaps has never mention needing preservatives or any need of refridgerating excess.

also, from the rave reviews on my toothpaste so far, if any indications, may not be able to keep enough in stock to worry about it
and I havent even made the non salted version yet lol

thinking of calling the first recipe "Ocean Freash Mint"
since everyone says its like getting smaked in the mouth by a ocean wave with a mint kick

but who knows yet, perhaps I have a wrong way of looking at preservatives and might need to rethink it down the road, but for now I'm good without

The reason I asked, that unlike solid soap, where water evaporates, this soap has a lot of water added which will stay. I'm not sure what the pH of the finished soap is and if the possible high pH would keep the germs away. Regular soap which has a high pH is ok, since it's used on the outside of the body. This soap is going into someone's mouth. So you see that's where my concern comes from.

Thought it about time for a quick update on this.

In the paste itself the "actual" water did seperate after a few days sitting.
However, after draining that off the thick paste left is great stuff.
Still taste great, foams perfect, cleans fantastic...
and a BIG +, my gums dont bleed anymore when brushing, YAY.
Teeth are so clean and slick feeling.
I cant get over the diffrence from store bought and this.
All who have tried it give it two thumbs up.

The Extra liquid soap (that hasnt been used much yet) has done well.
It has sequestered while sitting this long.
Still a bit cloudy though due to high SF to help with oil drawing on teeth and gums (was made for tooth soap stuff).
Still smells and taste kinda olive oil like.

So far so good

Well, I have to say you surely had a lot of perseverance, effort, stick- to- it- tivness and intestinal fortitude… That’s a lot of toothpaste and apparently it turned out to you’re satisfaction…Your tutorial and pictures are great. You’re to be commended and all the rest of those on this forum that would go through that much work and time to make a toothpaste recipe work.
