My first batch ever went over well (spearmint EO) - I thoroughly enjoyed every bar (and so did my guinea pigs - they begged me knowing full well what they were experimenting with  )

So I made a 2nd batch with a white tea/ginger FO....not the best ever but I think it will still be a great soap. There was some beading and excess oil on the bottom of the 2" pvc mold but its drying up nicely.

And that brings me to my 3rd batch. Oatmeal, Goats milk, Honey. 3" PVC mold (by 24"). Pics to follow.

So I was unsure of the order of steps and I think I messed up a little but I will try it different next time. It did stink like ammonia like I'd read - blechy. But the fiasco started when I poured and realized (a little too late) that I hadn't secured the bottom 'lid' well enough....gah! Luckily I had 3 preteens hanging out with me that night that could fetch me this and that to save what I could. I only lost about 2 1" bars so yay BUT my mold was a mess and today after unmolding, I found out it was also an internal mess...sort of. The freezer paper inside the mold flapped forward while I was pouring, I guess....you'll see what I mean. I did freeze my mold before the pour and right after but still got a partial gel going on....oh well. I REALLY cannot wait for my loaf molds to get here
 I also have noticed a smidgen of oozing honey...dangit! It smells awesome though...

Pics of the results (pardon the poor quality of pic...I have a crummy P&S):

Its no joke that this is a learn as you go hobby...makes me frustrated about a lady already selling her soap after admitting she's been at it 'almost a whole month!' ...and then another that claims she started making soap 'last year' when I know she only made her first batch 3 days before my own first batch in December 09...and is selling as well. WOW is all I can say. And eek for their 'customers'.

That is really scary. I absolutely agree that this hobby is a constant learning experience. I've been soaping for about 3 months. There is no chance in hell that I would be selling at this point. There's so much more to learn and experiment with before I'd even consider it.

I would NEVER buy from someone who has under at least 150 batches of soap completed... 3 months and already selling... we on the forum call that risky business ....

I hope whoever that is knows what theyre doing and has a **** good liability insurance, cause if anything ever happens and they go before a judge to defend themselves and the question "how long have you been doing this" pops up... I would be ashamed if I was a person saying...welll its been three months since my first batch...It should take that long to write and research a good business plan/marketing plan
thats just craazy!

and by the way your soap looks marvelous! I have yet to try a PVC mold but Im going to very very soon :)

You are so kind to call that hot mess 'marvelous' - almost brings a tear to my eye (us weepy womanfolk, ya know  ). Tomorrow I will clean and slice it up - it is quite soft still. I do like the round bars it makes...but I think I might save this mold for non-milk/honey soaps in the future. And use duct tape, etc on the bottom - heh.

Thanks for looking!

oh dear....i sympathise - it' has happenned to me, more than once. i'd say one of the lids i have is probably a bit dodgy, but it has been mixed up with the others, so i have to wait until the next time.

your soap is great, and soap is soap - a rose by any other name yadda yadda....

you should have seen how ugly my first batch was, but gee it was nice to use, as i am sure yours is.

I was going to suggest duct taping the end. This is something I figured out after my first batch. Heh. :D

And also wanted to tell you that(if you're gelling anyway. I havn't tried it with an ungelled batch) you don't need the freezer paper. I've been using a 3 inch pvc mold for my batches, and I just pop them in the freezer for a few hours before I wanna unmold and they come right out. Got that from one of Wayne's posts. :)

Your soaps look awesome I have been soaping for awhile and I have been using pringles cans from time to time and the first few times I used them the soap log turned out awesome then one night I was ambitious and made 4 different soaps 2 in the pringles cans and they must have overheated or gelled and got really funky on the sides worse then your paper getting out of place, I do have pvc Iam dying to try, maybe once they cure try a potato peeler to clean up the sides that is what Iam going to try when mine harden some more, I have a friend who started soaping after me and she has an etsy account and has been selling at a market and even used melt and pour soap and claimed it was cp on the etsy account, omg I have not sold one yet I am still trying to nail things down and could never sell something that I havent really tried out too much yet patience is a virtue, sometimes I dont have enough but I feel you my curing rack is filling up with all kinds of goodies just keep building your stock before you know it you will outsell them all. Happy soaping lots of luck

one more thing I forgot try saran wrap on your end with rubberbands and stand it in a big yogurt or coolwhip container it works great for those tubes
