Please see questions at the end, thanks!
So I did my second batch last weekend, did not stay on top of my lye and it turned into a brick at the bottom of my container (something distacted me and i didnt go back to it). Doh!
Last night I did my 3rd batch of soap, and i had success finally!
My recipt:
60% OO
20% palm
20% coconut
4T honey (added at trace)
4T Ground Oatmeal
Goatsmilk
I added the lye to 10oz of water, mixed with my oil, then added the goatsmilk (condensed). Lye solution was still hot, and may not have cooled enough, my lye/oil mix was at about 110 when i added the goatsmilk. Once it started to trace it traced fast! I added the honey and oatmeal and mixed it more, then poored it into my homemade wooden loaf mold!
Couple things I am happy about:
Wooden Mold. I made it, it worked, and woo hoo!
Lining: I used freezer paper and it was quick to line, simple, and worked well, woo hoo!
Amount of Soap - I found a calculation for how much oil you need to fill a mold. Calculations worked! Woo hoo!
Things to do better next time:
Traced very far, like thick pudding. Was hard to level the soap out in the mold. And i was almost to the bring of my mold, need to adjust down a bit for some mold working room.
Cut the soap into about 4 ounce bars, but they are only about 3/4" thick. Less soap will make them not as tall and a bit thicker, where i want them to be.
Questions:
-Will the smell of the soap change while it is curing? I has been right at 24 hours and this smell is not what I thought it would be so far.
-I covered the soap with saran wrap, then placed a board over the top. With honey and goatsmilk si the wooden mold too much heat? I left it on the ground in my garage so it was fairly cool in there. Should I set a fan up on it? Should i not put a top board over?
