Wow,

I just used my 1st pine tar soap and soaping in the yuck. My recipe was OO, 20% Shea with 20% pine tar. Obviously, no CO so there's no lather but do pine tar soaps have white or brown lather. Mine had brown slime. How do you achieve white lather from a tar soap?

Well, that you have a mostly OO soap is going make the lathering a little more difficult as well....
Try using a loofah or a pouf to generate some lather...

As for the color, I don't really know since I have never used pine tar, but I KNOW from slime since under-aged Castile soap makes exactly that.

Good for you ! I wanted to explore such a recipe myself.

I was wondering, would pine sap work instead of pine tar? Anybody knows ?

Also, was this a CP soap ? Do you happen to know what "only no FA" means from the soapcalc ?

Fragola,

If you are talking about the Soapcalc notation next to pine tar that says, "lye calc only no FA", I am pretty sure it means that the entry is for lye calculations only; there are no fatty acids in Pine tar...meaning that you can use it IN soap, but that it will not MAKE soap as a "single oil bar".

I had some reasoning behind not using OO in my pine tar soap but I can't remember what it was now. The soap turned out fantastic. Mostly palm, 20% pine tar, and small amounts of castor, CO, and cocoa butter.

I don't think it's possible to have white or pale lather with 20% pine tar.

Fragola,

this was a CP soap. It traced quick and the soap turned out pretty hard in 4 weeks but I guess I have to wait a little longer since it has mostly OO. I should know about 100% OO soaps taking longer to cure but this soap was hard after such a short time and with the addition of Shea, I thought it would be 'different'. Dumb me. I think I have to alter the recipe next time.

I've given it to a couple of people and they said the smell was strong. The lather was not a problem since these people use only Castile soaps. But for the skin problems and such that pine tar soap is known for, I think they haven't used the soap long enough to know.

I make Pine Tar soap all the time and don't end up with brown lather.

My recipe includes Tallow, OO, Cocoa Butter, Lanolin, Castor and Jojoba oil in addition to the Pine Tar. This soap moves very fast so you really are better doing it as a HP with full water. My Pine tar is at 10%.

Hopes that helps....

Thanks Lindy,

Do you soaps lather well without CO? What does the lanolin do to/for the soap? I'll give it another try with tallow, oo and castor. I have to find the other ingredients. Does 10% pine help with skin problems?

I just rendered my own tallow a few days ago, so it's a chance to use it again. I must tell you guys, I was so proud of myself for being able to render tallow. It was much easier than I had imagined!
