Hello all, My wifes mother (about 80) finally found the recipe that her mom used to make thier soap with. I got a kick out of seeing it so I thought I would share it with the rest of you and see what kind of comments come from it.

1 can lye in 1 qt. water. Dissolve & let cool. Have 5# grease melted to lukewarm. Add 1 cup Borax, 1/2 cup Kerosene, 1/2 cup amonia & lye water. Stir til like honey, no longer as it will separate. This takes more grease than our old recipe but its quick to make and works good. So good luck to you. Sis Em. An oldie huh?

So what are your thoughts everyone?

Kerosene and ammonia???? Wow!

My dad was talking about when they used to make soap on the farm where he grew up. I should ask him if he remembers the ingredients.

WOW! That sounds like it would take the skin right off you!! It is neat to see how things used to be made before improved technology. Thanks for sharing. :D

Thanks for sharing that - scares the daylights out of me - - couldn't even begin to imagine making that one.

Wow!
Talk about having to worry about flashpoints...

My dad also used to make soap on his farm. They raised hogs and melted down the fat for soap.

He said he remembers using two different kinds of lye depending on whether they were making bar soap for bathing or flake soap (hand grated) for laundry. I'm not sure what the difference could have been unless they used Potassium Hydroxide for the soap flakes and Sodium Hydroxide for the bar soap???

But he doesn't remember any other details... other than it was hard and uncomfortable to bathe with... not like what we have today.

I'll have to ask him about kerosene and amonia. Maybe I'll make him a 1# batch for nostalgia's sake.

Actually one set of my grandparents were homesteaders in Southern Saskatchewan and they made their own soap as well. I only have my 2 Aunts left from that generation so I'm sending them down some soap for Christmas. They are so impressed that I've gotten into soap making

that would def. exfoliate the skin .. lol .. it's cool to see how far we've come .. very interesting .. thanks for sharing :D

I talked to my mother in law last night and she said that they used this soap recipe for everything. Bath, dishes, laundry. Everything!
