Okay, I've done it. I just made a batch of 100% Coconut with a superfat of 20%. I found on another forum the concept of coconut superfat bars, and thought I would give them a go. Apparently you can superfat that high with coconut because it is quite stable. My son has quite oily skin, so I am not concerned about using that much coconut on him. I also did a charcoal swirl in it, have run out of clay, so thought I would give charcoal a go for it's filtering/absorbent properties. It is now in a wooden log mould in the oven with the oven warmed, is just starting to gel. It looks great, I will post pics when I take it out. Has anyone else made this type of batch before?

Snap Chrissy! I made an 80% coconut 20% shea batch yesterday and superfatted at 20%.....I unmoulded this afternoon and so far it is lovely! We will have to compare notes over the weeks and months to see how they go. I know Irishlass here makes pure coconut oil soap and superfats somewhere between 15 - 20% and she loves them.

Waiting for pics......!

Tanya :)

Tanya, mixing it up with the shea butter sounds lovely, I am waiting for my order to come from aussie soap supplies, then I will do one like that.
HI Irishlass!!I was so inspired by you to make this soap. My son is going to love it. It set up so nicely. I got full gel within 45 minutes, it heats up pretty quickly!!
Anyway, now it's in the freezer because I can't get it out of the mould!!
I will put up pics as soon as I get it out. I love working with the charcoal!!

I think I am the odd one out with the superfatted coconut bar. I made a batch in the middle of January (100% coconut, 20% superfat) based on the raves for the soap, and I don't care for it. There is nothing wrong with it, and it's not at all drying or anything - it's just not my cup of tea, I guess. I don't care for the lather and I like a bar that feels "creamier". It is a very white bar, if you like that. And it's very hard.

I gave most of it away at work yesterday - we'll see how others like it.

I might have to try the coconut/shea combo.

ETA: can't wait to see your charcoal version, Chrissy! Sounds beautiful!

I make a 100% coconut bar all the time, but I only superfat at 5-10%. To me and my skin it feels no different than a 20% superfat, but I do have oily skin as well... I LOVE it. It's one of my favorite soaps along with my high % of Almond Oil soap that I use for myself also. :)

I've been soaping with 75-80% coconut for a year or two now. Strangely, the stark white color of 100% CO soap doesn't sing to me.

Carebear what do you add to your other 20 or 25%? Cocoa or shea butter? And what level do you superfat that particular soap?
I didn't specifically make this soap for it to be white, I made it more for my son's skin, which is very oily, so next time I will lower the superfat a bit because he doesn't really need all that free oil, having said that it will still be very cleansing according to the soapcalc numbers.
I cut the soap last night, and tried a little bit, I expected the lather to be really really creamy/bubbly, but it's pretty average. Does charcoal reduce the lather? Because I think I added a bit more charcoal than needed, what I mean is I think I took too much soap out to colour with the charcoal, would have liked it to be more white than black, this batch is more black than white.

I tried a batch of this a while back and my opinion was it was just ok. Not fantastic not bad either, just couldn't see what the fuss was about?!
I prefer creamy lather not OMG bubble-fest

i love this combo and rtcp it- 70% coconut, 20% shea butter and 10% castor and use a lye discount of 10%. i get a creamy lather with lots of bubbles!

See, this is my point re the 100% coconut bar. I don't think the lather is all that.

I have used charcoal in two recipes that feature a bunch of different oils (can't remember off the top of my head, but something like coconut/olive/crisco/cocoa butter/castor), one with about 1/2 the batch charcoal, and one with about 1/4 the batch charcoal. Both have nice lather.

I've made a 70% coconut oil salt bar and it's nice but honestly, my favorite is still a coconut, palm and olive blend.

i thought to much coconut is very drying?

Hi Dalzeil - as an oil CO is lovely and moisturising for your hair and skin though in soap it can be drying unless you superfat your recipe more than usual. I chose to superfat at 20% - this leaves free oil molecules in the cured soap to counteract the super cleaning ability of saponified CO.

Since you just cut it last night, don't let your first impression at washing with some the very next day be your last or only impression. To be honest, I've never been impressed with any of my soap's lather only one day out. To me, my soap is not at its earliest best until at least 4 weeks old. I always reserve my lather judgement until then.

How much charcoal did you use?
