Umm... what happens if you spill soap or lye on a formica countertop? Does it hurt the countertop? I would think it would be safe. I mean, you can set fairly hot pans on a countertop before it scorches, and it stands up to pretty heavy cleansers and stuff... I have no idea about whether it would stick to the mold or not though.

Only one solution.... Try it! :)

I have never done this. So i am just going to lend my thoughts. Grayceworks has some very good ideas. But being that i have used solid wood molds, i know how over time they can warp due to the heat of the soap. Formica is a series of layers of composite woods that are glued together, which i would think would make it more susceptible to warping. I would still try it though, and most definitely line it, when i drip my traced soap on my formica counters, and i don't clean it right away, it sticks like the dickens. Good luck!!!

I would test it by spilling a small amount of raw soap batter on a scrap of your formica and let it sit for 24 hours. Then remove it and see if the surface is unchanged. If all looks good, then give it a try.

I have never used formica. However, I do use a piece of scrap formica as a soaping surface and contact with raw soap seems to have changed the surface. I also once had some raw soap drip on a non-stick cookie sheet upon which I had placed my soap loaf when I did CPOP and the cookie sheet suffered some discoloration and damage.
