    Tallow soap with fishy smell?

I have had people tell me that my soap "stinks" and when I question them to find out more I find that those people are normally very sensitive to scents or odors in general. Some can't stand soap made with lard, but have no problems with some made with beef tallow because of the underlying odor...

    Instant Pot

I received the 6 qrt Duo for Christmas and LOVE it. I cook something in it at least once a week, but most weeks I use it more than that. This week I made Mongolian Beef, Pepperoni bake without the bake part (elbow mac, speg sauce, pre-cooked hamburger, pepperonis and water, added cheese after...

Soap comparison. Can cheap oils work just as well?

I don't use the deer tallow alone or in a high quantity. I have not has the scum problem. Last batch I made with it I used 10% deer tallow, 45% beef tallow 30% OO and 15% CO, with 12% superfat. I made this for a friend who has problems with many soaps and she loved it. The qualities may not be...

Soap comparison. Can cheap oils work just as well?

I only made one batch with chicken fat, don't remember if I had that result or not. I didn't have enough to use a high percentage in that batch. I do keep all my oils in a fridge because they get too hot in the garage otherwise and seem go rancid faster with temp fluctuations. I don't know if...

Soap comparison. Can cheap oils work just as well?

I have been lucky in that I haven't had DOS in quite some time (meaning that I have probably just jinxed myself and the next batch will be covered in it). I do believe in using the fruits of your labors, a good way to live. I may not raise the cattle or hogs that I get my fat from, but I do...

Soap comparison. Can cheap oils work just as well?

I have been told, and it seems to be true for me, that honey ends up almost burning during the saponification process in CP, but was wondering if you add it at the very last point you can in HP if it still would? I don't know, I've only done HP once. Can I ask why the beeswax? I used it in on...

    Hard Vinegar Soap

Thank you so much, I was getting really confused. Probably over thinking it. I took the 2 oz of vinegar * 28 to get grams (56) then took the original amount of lye * .357 to get the 61.8, not sure how I came up with that part - again, over thinking and causing confusion. So then to set this...

    Hard Vinegar Soap

Since my math skills are non-existent, could someone check this for me and let me know if I am on the right track before I make this batch and mess it up completely? A recipe calling for 6.2 oz of lye, 12.4 oz water (make this easy to figure) and I want to replace some of the water with 5%...

    Hard Vinegar Soap

I may have to try this. It sounds like you can replace all water or some portion of water. I think I will try with some portion of my water replaced with the vinegar to see if the soap is something we might like.

    Hard Vinegar Soap

Sounds interesting, does vinegar soap melt/dissolve quickly like 100% CO soap does or does it last longer like a softer soap does? I really hate the idea of my soap melting and running down the drain.

    How much honey?

thanks for all the info, I will put it to practice this afternoon. That honey soap looks like it should be sitting on a plate on the table IrishLass, like we got fresh honey as kids. I don't think mine will be that fancy, but it it should at least do what it is designed to do.

    How much honey?

Thanks, I'll keep these answers in mind. I am planning to make some honey soap tomorrow and hope I don't over-do it. I don't mind the dark color that may result

    How much honey?

I have used a bit of honey in some of my soaps, but never enough to be able to really tell any difference in non-honey soap. What is the max or "normal" amount of honey that works in soap? If I add too much what kind of problems would I end up with? I need to make some oatmeal/honey and just...

Brine soap gone nuts - totally cracked!!

Actually, I went back and pulled one out of my "ugly" stash and started cutting into it and realized the color is overall DOS. I hadn't really looked at this for quite awhile as I have been pretty busy in the last year so hadn't paid close enough attention to it. I think this is the only batch...

Brine soap gone nuts - totally cracked!!

First time I tried making this type of brine soap it was very easy to crumble and would not hold together at all. I tried to rebatch it and that didn't work, so I grated part it up and mixed it with another batch. I have made several batches since then with no problems until this last time. I...

    MY Lardy!

One friend told me once that she hadn't paid attention to what was in the soaps I give her, then realized there were certain ones she liked better than others. She checked the labels and the ones she liked all had animal fat in them, whereas the ones that she was not as fond of were 100% veggie...

    Advantages of Coconut Milk?

I double checked and I have Golden Star Coconut Milk out of Thailand. Ingredients: coconut milk, water. Total fat: 22g, or 22% of the daily recommended value, 20g from saturated fat, 0 from trans fat. I know this one makes a better whipped cream substitute than the others I have used that I have...

    Advantages of Coconut Milk?

I have seen CM used as the water in soap. What is the advantage of using CM? I have several cans on hand of pure CM, it's the kind that is very thick, very little "water" in it and no additives. It makes the best "CM whipped cream". Is that the kind to put in soap?

    New Salt Bar

I did not realize that they really liked a long cure. I guess I'll have to put them away in a safe place (I tend to lose things when I do that) and when I find them again they will have their 6 month cure completed.

    Permanent Mold Liner - Mylar?

I would think the chopping mats would work very well. I have them in the kitchen and they go through the dishwasher on high heat with no problem. I think I will look for some more to use as a lining for my PVC pipe mold. I bought the ones I have at a $1 store so will have to look for more.
