Preservatives, are there any that aren't animal tested?

But animals' bodies do not respond the way people's bodies do. Their systems are built to tolerate different sorts of things than ours are, which is why animal testing is often inaccurate. In medicine, for example, there have been plenty of AIDS vaccines created that cured animals, but are...

    Essential Oils and Lip Balm

Some of my essential oils are organic and some aren't, and there doesn't seem to be much difference in terms of sensitivity. There are some essential oils that I don't like to use at all, like cinnamon and peppermint, because they are very irritating even in small quantities. Even when I have...

Are emulsifying wax and cetyl alcohol interchangeable?

I'm not actually planning to add any water to my products though. Just glycerin, oils and butters. I would make my body spray like a moisturizer with a base of fractionated coconut oil. I don't know if I would add glycerin to that or not, haven't decided yet. But mainly I am curious about adding...

Preservatives, are there any that aren't animal tested?

Thank you for this link. Overall I think it's good news. I'm still confused about this statement in the article though: "However, if a ban is enforced on animal testing, proving the safety of ingredients may not be possible." Anyone can Google "animal testing alternatives" and find loads...

Preservatives, are there any that aren't animal tested?

Yes, I know that many ingredients have been tested on animals and still are, but I'm just trying to find out if there is anything new that hasn't been. I'm willing to use raw ingredients that may have been tested by someone at some point, because anyone can test anything anytime they want, even...

Preservatives, are there any that aren't animal tested?

I'm really sorry I made you feel that way. It's not at all my intention. I'm only looking for current alternatives to animal testing in cosmetic preservatives. Medicine is a whole other thing with very different priorities. Cosmetics are trivial in the big picture, and health and safety always...

Preservatives, are there any that aren't animal tested?

Yes, I do. I just think it's a very common misconception, and understandably so. I used to say the same thing, but the more research I do on the matter the more my mind has changed.

Thank you for the feedback, I appreciate it. :)

Preservatives, are there any that aren't animal tested?

Actually that isn't the case, even though it's beneficial to a lot of companies if we believe this, and they work hard to make sure most people do believe this. Of course products need to be tested, but they don't need to be tested on animals. No company is required by any law to test on...

Preservatives, are there any that aren't animal tested?

(eta: not to nit-pick, but we ALL drive our cars on roads that test animals' intelligence to cross safely every day, but noone notices... we all visit doctors... they did dissect animals to 'test' before cutting a human open.... Have you ever taken medication... oh I could go on forever on a...

Preservatives, are there any that aren't animal tested?

I found this post kind of late I guess, but I'm wondering the same thing. I have never introduced any water-based ingredients into my products yet but I am thinking I might start with a few new things. But I am totally unwilling to do this if I can't find a preservative that is guaranteed not to...

Are emulsifying wax and cetyl alcohol interchangeable?

I am thinking of introducing glycerin into some of my products. I have only ever worked with oil-based ingredients so I guess I need to start considering emulsifyers. Does Emulsifying Wax (I'm looking at Polawax NF Vegetable base) do the same thing as Cetyl Alcohol? Are they interchangeable...

    Castor Wax Lip Balm?

I actually prefer low-gloss lip balms. Personally I like this better, but I also have a few male customers who don't want glossy lips.

    Castor Wax Lip Balm?

I'm vegan so I don't use any beeswax. I tried out the castor wax at several ratios and it just wasn't working out. My two options with this wax are grainy-and-firm or smooth-and-liquidy -- no middle ground. It's about the same experience I had trying to use soy wax... it just isn't hard...

    Castor Wax Lip Balm?

Has anyone here successfully made lip balm using castor wax, and no other type of wax? I used to use a combination of candelilla and soy which worked ok, but I switched to castor because it seemed harder than soy and I like that it's white and not yellow like candelilla. However after...

Unsightly air pockets in balm tubes

Aha! Again, JUST in case anyone else is browsing with this same problem in the future... I fixed it. I added a little more jojoba oil so that the lip balm will harden more slowly. I figured out that there was too much wax, and it was cooling way too quickly, which is what was leaving...

Unsightly air pockets in balm tubes

Just in case anyone else has this issue... I think I have found a way to minimize the problem a little. Instead of using a lip balm filling tray to pour the lip balm in quickly, I am using a dropper to deliver the lip balm into the tube in the direct center of each opening so that it does...

Unsightly air pockets in balm tubes

I make my lip balms in clear oval tubes. When my lip balm is a dark colour, there are all these light patches along the walls of the tubes that are not so noticable with light-coloured balms. It makes the lip balm look moldy or something but it's not -- the balm itself is definitely all one...

Dead Sea Salt vs. Epsom Salt?

Thanks for asking this, I've been wondering the same thing. People are saying they are different -- how are they different if used the same way? I am wondering about bath salts and scrubs.
