    ugly soap

Yes that is my wife's sentiments exactly but that did not extend to my soap making with her kitchen utensils. I figure I'll go to 1st Monday trade day & get my own antique.

    ugly soap

Well I got a cheap crock pot and did a re batch of 2 pounds of soap. On the Efficacious Gentleman's web site I read about sodium lactate and decided to add it to my soap. I got much improvement in the texture of the soap and with the moisturizing effect of the sodium lactate it should be a lot...

    ugly soap

Yes I agree that home made soap should look like home made soap. My problem is that the grease I use tends to curdle and set before I can get it mixed and into the mold. I use grease from a hamburger grill and use the recipe for beef tallow. I use that grease because I can get all I need at...

    Reheat Lye?

I think your lye is still good. It needed to cool down after mixing anyway and if you reheat it to the temperature you want for soap it should do well.

    ugly soap

I've read a couple of articles about re batching soap in a crock pot. I'm not trying to make a gourmet soap or soap to sell but if I share soap with family or friends I want it to have a reasonable texture and appearance. Some of the soap I made recently does not pass that test. I am looking...

    Eagle Lye

No, The booklet I have is 52 pages & probably older since it is all black and white. I looked for it on the web since it is too delicate to use without possible damage but had no luck.

    Eagle Lye

OK I ran a couple of recipes through the calculator and it comes out very close to 12 ounces so when I see specs for one can of lye I will think 12 ounces.

    Eagle Lye

I came across an old pamphlet from Eagle Lye published in 1931 with interesting recipes for soap making. All give instruction to use a certain number of cans but I don't know how many ounces is in the can. Does anyone know the size of the cans that we got when it was available to buy at the...

    Cold Process Soap

scent I increased grease to 5 pounds and water to 2 pints with 8 oz lye and came out fairly well. I would like to add a scent. My wife thinks Almond. Any suggestion of how much for 5 pounds and when is it added to the mix?

    Cold Process Soap

Excess Lye OK thanks folks. I thought I was using 5% excess grease. May have entered data wrong into the calculator. I will check that and also check on a different calculator. I will either cut lye or increase water and try again.

    Cold Process Soap

Excess Lye Cooking burgers in a griddle has a lot of fat runoff. I am not sure where it falls in the order of grease but I used the values for tallow in the lye calculator. It will make very good soap because my father used it a lot when I was a youngster but I didn't pay much attention to...

    Cold Process Soap

I am new to soap making and have produced a couple of usable batches but still have a few problems. I am using a very basic cold recipe with grease from hamburger. I use 3.5 lbs grease, 22 oz water, and 8 oz lye. I bring both fat and lye water to 110 degrees before mixing. It makes soap...
