    Adding salt to soap batter

It depends on how much salt you are using. One or two tsp/pound of soap isn't going to affect trace. (Although, now that I reread your post, I see you are talking about sea salt. I use table salt, so there may be a difference there.) The most common culprits for quick trace are: 1. Too much...

    Start Praying, Mommas!

Gaius survived his first flight! He'll be gone on his senior trip for about a week. He's nervous but excited. I'm wondering how Pax will do without his brother. Good to have some other moms, grandmas, and aunties who can relate!

Keratin extraction, how to do it?

I just did a quick Google search: It looks like there are a couple of videos floating around and several articles as well. I don't know if they're are exactly what you're looking for as I didn't click through any of them. If you haven't already done so, that's where I would start. Also, search...

    Start Praying, Mommas!

Pax (17) has been quite nervous about driving, which surprised us. We thought it would be Gaius, but he's looking for reasons to take the car. We're doing a little of that, too-- Gaius has his Senior trip tomorrow and this summer, they are off on a mission trip to Northern Ireland. 😳

    Start Praying, Mommas!

I know what you mean! Where we are it's very busy. Most use the expressway to get everywhere. Dad showed them what passes for a "back way," which is much more complicated. Today, one drove while the other acted as navigator.

"Back in my day..." 14 was the permit age, too. Where I am now, it's 16. Then, there are various types of licenses and rules based on how old you are. You don't get your grown up license until you're 21! So far, they've only hit the curb...

    tooth soap

We're not trying to make you prove anything. We are genuinely confused by what you are saying and trying to figure out how to help you. It sounded to me like you might be using one of those recipes that involves a liquid Castile soap. It also sounded like maybe you didn't understand the process...

Just so we all understand what we're talking about here, can you give us this recipe? Or at least the ingredients? What book are you working from?

    How much to add ?

Ya... The supplier is going to tell you the most you can use by percentage. And from there, you can calculate by hand or put it into the lye calculator to figure it out for your self. And, if you are at max amount for that FO and it's not strong enough, better to pick a different one than to go...

    Soap making for school kids

What is the goal of the lesson? Science? History? I considered teaching a scouting troop. I outlined the whole thing from supplies needed to adult help. In the end, the biggest factor was the caustic lye. I could not come up with a way for this to be a safe project. If I ever did do it, I would...

    All soap colors turning purple

As @DeeAnna says, "You'll need to provide your recipe, all ingredients all in weights. Don't leave out any ingredients, however minor, please." Also, tell us more about those silicone liners. How long have you been using them? What color are they? Where did you pick them up? Also, also, what...

    Can Lye be reheated?

Ya. That's normal for a beginner. 😁 I think we all went through that phase. I will put mix my lye solution while it sits in an cool water bath and melt the hard oils while it cools down.

May 2024 SMF Challenge: Hanger Swirls!

Rule E seems to say you can use anything that can be made into the shame of a hanger tool: "stainless steel straws or cheap wooden chopsticks taped together, or anything else that can withstand lye."

    Sugar vs Lye?

Personal opinion: If you're new to soapmaking, hold off on the honey and beer for a bit and stick to the sugar until you read up on how they behave. They are a little more complicated to use than plain old sugar.

May 2024 SMF Challenge: Hanger Swirls!

Clarification: you have to layer the soap before swirling? You can't do an ITP or Drop swirl and then use the hanger?
