The kids played with it like play dough. The counters are VERY clean 😂

    Salting out soap scraps

It is on Classic Bells. Lots of fun! https://classicbells.com/soap/saltOutTut.asp#:~:text=Another%20way%20of%20reclaiming%20soap,table%20salt)%20to%20the%20mixture.

    Salting out soap scraps

I messed up and used about 2x the water you recommended. I was worried it wouldn’t work, but it came out fine. It was a great use for a leftover box of hardened canning soap. I’ll let you know how the confetti/ciaglia works!

    Salting out soap scraps

@DeeAnna in an attempt to keep the kids occupied this evening, we used your tutorial to salt out about 800g of soap scraps. It worked beautifully and was terrific fun. The kids had a blast and the kitchen was destroyed. Perfect project. We will try using the crumbles in a Ciaglia soap.

    Grams vs. Ounces

Growing up with “metric is coming,” I love this discussion. I think distance in miles, carpentry in feet/inches, and baking/soap in grams.

    Avocado, Almond, Olive

They are about the same by me, but that is for grocery store quantities.

    Avocado, Almond, Olive

I’ve tried replacing olive oil with high oleic sunflower oil with good results. I’ve also had good results with local sunflower oil, but it is much more expensive than grocery store oils.

    Rendering Animal Fat Questions

I “wet render” lard and pour off as much water as possible. When I cool the lard, the little bit left jellies at the bottom of the container. With the correct container I can pop the finished lard out and scrape off the jelly. Then I remelt the lard and pour it into a jar for longer term storage.

    Avocado, Almond, Olive

Thank you, both. It also seems avocado is high in unsaponifiables. I’ve been playing with shea butter to make palm-based soap with qualities similar to my favorite lard soap. I wonder if adding avocado oil could help. I haven’t looked at rice bran oil. I’ll have to check it out. Ty!

Formula 710 Alcohol/CDA-12a for transparent soap?

Has anyone used formula 710 ethanol (aka CDA-12a) for making transparent soap? It looks like ethanol with a small amount of n-heptane as a denaturing agent. I found some locally. It is cheaper and higher proof than the Everclear I can buy locally. I see Failor’s book recommends SDA 3a and...

Has anyone used an alcohol intermediary extraction in soap?

Thanks! Will is evaporate by itself or should I heat it?

Has anyone used an alcohol intermediary extraction in soap?

Thanks, Curlycoat2! I’m not seeing any alcohol slick on my infusion, but I can smell it. How are you evaporating it out? Do you do it as part of heating your oils or in a separate process. I’m having a similar experience re: depth of color. This infusion is darker than anything I’ve made before.

Has anyone used an alcohol intermediary extraction in soap?

Thanks, AliOops. That was my concern. I wondered what level constitutes “significant.”

Has anyone used an alcohol intermediary extraction in soap?

It was an option listed in Failor’s book on liquid soaps. I struggled with other methods, but adding an ounce of alcohol worked beautifully for me.

Has anyone used an alcohol intermediary extraction in soap?

Thanks, Elise. I’ve used it when making KOH liquid soaps to speed up saponification. I’m a little worried about soap on a stick if it does the same thing with NaOH.

Has anyone used an alcohol intermediary extraction in soap?

Hello all, I did a search but didn’t see much. I tried an alcohol intermediary extraction with calendula and high oleic sunflower oil. It came out darker than anything I’ve made before. I’d like to use it in soap but am curious if/how the small amount of alcohol will affect the batter. Has...

    Suggestions for oils

Apologies, DeeAnna! Crock pot hot process. I’ll end up trying both :)

    Suggestions for oils

It looked like kokum butter might work too. I ordered a small amount to try. I’ve stuck to CPHP so far so was hoping stearic might be better behaved. It sounds way more finicky in cold process.

    Avocado, Almond, Olive

Thanks, Kari! I hadn’t heard that about avocado oil.
