    CP Separating layers

No, it didn't gel, but then I never gel my soaps as I prefer the more muted colours. Another thing I forgot to mention, there are white bands around each bar in the middle of the White and pink layers. Not separation, just a look of soda ash in a band around the bar. I tried to lather a...

    CP Separating layers

A short while ago I came across a website here in the UK which sells soaps made from 50% coconut oil and 50% rapeseed oil. This intrigued me as I had read rapeseed can be very prone to DOS at high levels and I know coconut would not normally be used at that level in soap for skin. They also...

    Moisturizing??

I have also been trying to make soap that is gentle enough for my skin. I find 10% coconut oil or less is necessary for me. My skin just can't handle more than that but with the right recipe I don't need to superfat more than 5% and I have a smooth silky feeling with no tightness or itching.

    Happy accidents

Both of them are a light cream colour and a dense creamy texture. I had previously only ordered Shea butter from one other supplier and that was still soft but grainy. This is also the first time I have tried a grade of CO other than Virgin food grade.

    Happy accidents

Yes it is. I've had more than enough of the other sort!

    Happy accidents

Yes that's true. i had the superfat at 6% but it now equates to 3%. Again, something I would never have done but it does still seem okay. Next time I make it I will just go to 5% to avoid cutting the bubbles as much as possible.

    Happy accidents

Surprisingly, not too bad. In the first week, it was pretty low but it has definitely gotten better and some good sized bubbles can be worked up in amongst a more creamy dense lather. I am hoping It will improve even more though in the next 5 weeks. They all contain yoghurt too and a fair...

    Happy accidents

Just thought I'd share my latest soap success which turned out be a happy accident. About three weeks ago I made not one, but two batches of slightly different soaps each (I thought) containing 10% coconut oil. Turns out I had picked up a large container of Shea butter instead of coconut...

    Olive vs avocado in CP

I think I will definitely sub 10% of my olive oil for the avocado and see how I like the difference!

    Olive vs avocado in CP

That's interesting Carolyn, i have loved sunflower oil in my soaps but I have not had any high oleic so I've had to keep it fairly low. I think I'll look into that. Doesn't high oleic from any source contribute to bar slime though?

    Olive vs avocado in CP

Thanks to all. Seems it would be worth my while trying it after all. Very interesting to note that testers could detect a difference at just 7%, I was thinking of adding around 20%!

    Olive vs avocado in CP

Does anyone think that avocado oil offers enough in terms of unique properties to be worth substituting for some of the olive oil in CP? I see that avocado has a bit more palmitic and less oleic but overall they seem close enough that I wonder if it's worth me trying it.

    Thoughts on Sunflower Oil

I have done something very similar to this. It felt great on the skin, was pretty hard but developed DOS quickly:(

    SFIC Bases in UK

Does anyone in the UK currently have a supplier in the UK or Europe for SFIC melt and pour bases? Never mind, I just remembered You wish.nl, I'll try them!

Milder Sap value for coconut oil

I think they use 0.14 rather than the 0.18 on soap calc.

    First lye accident

I have to say mymy PLEASE at least wear the goggles. I had my accident a few months ago now while I was hand stirring some freshly mixed HP soap batter. I had taken off my goggles to leave the room but for some reason I just went back to move the batter to check it wasn't sticking at the...

100% coconut oil soap cure time

That's good to know. I am hoping that there will be no great difference when I use the cheaper grade as the Virgin CO is so much more pricey. It was all I had at the time I made them though.

100% coconut oil soap cure time

Mymy, I just checked the jar, it was actually Chi 100% Virgin coconut oil.

Milder Sap value for coconut oil

Thanks songwind I have always used soapcalc too. It seems a bit bizarre that 7%SF on the ozcalc has the same amount of lye as 30% on soapcalc! Now is not the time to be messing that much with my recipes! I think I'll stick with soapcalc figures.

100% coconut oil soap cure time

Hi mymy Yes, the bubbles / lather is very good and has a fluffy feeling compared to the creamier feeling in my regular soaps. One thing I love about these it the complete lack of olive oil "slime" I have in so many other bars. There has been no sign of DOS and it has held the synthetic...
