    Formulating a recipe?

An easy place to start with non palm recipes, like kchaystack mentioned above, is to use butters. I used to start with 15% butter, 20% Coconut Oil, and 65% Olive. You can try other oils in part of, but not (in my findings) in total of, Olive. I also like to add 5-15% Castor Oil (subtracted from...

    new to melt and pour

I think it should work just fine. Maybe try letting soap set up for a few hours, then put mold into the refrigerator for 10 minutes, finally remove soap by pushing on one end.

120 degrees for layering and embedding

It's been over a year now since my last m&p layer soap but, if you don't mind, I will give my two cents. I don't use a thermometer for temperature. I prep my first layer by microwaving in 15-30 second bursts until almost melted, stir until soap is uniformly melted, add additives, and pour. I...

    Impressionist soap

I used up all that I had and the color was quite light. If I were to do this again, I would keep the solid extract and resuspend just before use. When I would use the extract for chromatography, I would suspend in a solvent and use that solvent to separate the components of the pigment on silica...

    Andalusian Heavy lye Castile

I tried making a mayonnaise with the olive oil. The resulting soap has been curing for, I believe, about two months. It is not slimy to me. Has anyone else tried that?

    Stubborn ash won't go away

I'm curious about this as well. It seems to me that I get the ash developing after I cut my bars too early (because I'm often impatient and don't want to wait over 24 hrs to cut :p). I think this was mentioned before here? Does anyone else find this? The scientific soapmaking book is awesome...
