    Antique Soaping Information

Well, my grandmother used wooden fruit crates as well, and I see you are from Iowa, makes me think it was a common practice here. Cleaning out my Aunt's house last year I actually acquired 20 or so of these crates.

    Translucent soap?

Well, you could distill the 80 proof Alcohol again.... Take a specific gravity reading before and after to determine the new proof once your done distilling.

    Antique Soaping Information

Not sure if this is the correct place, so move if needed. Does anyone know what was typically used for soap molds before silicon and plastic? I'm guessing wood, with freezer type paper. I'm interested in what an old factory would have used.

    Today's Puppy Post

Buck, the red merle, has a right blue eye, and his left eye is split, half blue/half hazel. Baloo, the blue merle, has 2 brown eyes and in the center of his right cornea a small blue stripe. His grandmother Sophie has a right blue eye, so I think its her shining through. You can see the blue...

    Translucent soap?

The thing to consider, a shot of 80 proof alcohol has the same volume as a shot of 150 proof alcohol, or 190 proof alcohol. The difference is the 80 proof has water making up the remaining volume vs alcohol. That's why the discount formula I gave is so important, and I think you need to get...

I don't think so. It's usually also added as a separate ingredient.

    Translucent soap?

You have to discount the alcohol, and I think that may not be enough, I've only attempted it once myself, and I did get translucent soap, but that was with 150 proof Everclear, so I'm not sure. Here is the formula: 90% Alcohol 80 Proof Bourbon = 40% Alcohol .90/.40 = 2.25 So if the recipe...

Please - tell me why - I'm so grossed out !

This thread is awesome, I'd like to re-title it, Game of Mice, who will sit on the soap throne. My grandmother used to say if we said bad things she'd wash our mouths out with soap, then we'd have beautiful speech just like the mice. Now I wonder if that was reference to mice eating soap?

Can you use a steel soap mold?

Depending on the type of steel, it will rust from exposure to water and heat. So you could trigger rust from making soap in it. High Carbon steel that has been properly heat treated will require more heat and water than Low Carbon steel to rust, but it will rust. Stainless steel, will also...

How do you stop Oatmeal from scratching soap when you cut it?

I've only done it once, and it was for a loaf with Oatmeal. It was scratching, and I remembered seeing a video a long time ago on French Milled Soap and they used a ban saw to cut their soap. It worked well, but I had to clean the blade off.
