How many bars do you have curing?

I currently have about 24 bars that are curing, and 24 bars that are fully cured. Shamefully low numbers for a professed soap addict, I know. :) But soap making is just a hobby for me, I don't sell, just make it for family and friends. Although I wouldn't mind if I had time to make soap...

    Calculating SF with Goat Milk

Like Reinbeau I don't ever figure the fat in the milk into the lye calculations. It just gives me a little bit higher SF and I am just fine with that.

    Storing smaller batches of soap?

Thanks Irish Lass, they look like a great solution. My only problem is I need them like yesterday. my "curing rack" is full and I need to make room for the soap I made last night. I wonder where all this soap came from it seems to have multiplied LOL

What soapy thing have you done today?

Last night I made a lavender FO soap. White base with a lavender swirl. I didn't have any lavender/purple colorant so I just used UM Blue, and an FDC red color. I should have used more UM blue, and didn't get the FDC mixed as well as I thought I did so I have little pink spots in my soap. :oops...

    Storing smaller batches of soap?

These soaps are already cured, 6-8 weeks and ready to be stored away till I am ready to use them. Looking online, I found these at Ikea: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80098583/ For the regular mold I am getting 7 bars of soap, plus a couple of skinny end pieces. These...

    Storing smaller batches of soap?

Recently I got the WSP silicone molds...the regular and the small silicone soap molds. They produce much smaller batches than my previous molds. I used to use plastic shoe boxes to store my soap, but that seems like such a waste of space to put these smaller batches in. Anyone have any...

    Is this true?

You can mix the lye ahead of time, but be aware that some of the water may have evaporated from it. Know the weight of your container, and weigh the lye solution right after mixing. Weigh the container the next day, then you can determine how much water will have evaporated so you can add the...

    cost of tallow

I have used the great value shortening and it has worked fine. I have seen other grocers list theirs as Precreamed Shortening so if you see that read the label, it should be tallow.

When you were just starting out what amazed you the most?

Glen, I know what you mean. When I first started out I had a couple of books. One was The Complete Soap Maker by Norma Cooney....the way she put it is that you had to make big batches of plain soap, then everything got rebatched to add colors scents, herbs etc. Can you imagine? I thought...

    1 dollar soap

This is me too. Except that it's kind of a need for us too in that we have sensitive skin. I do consider it a hobby too though. Right now we have enough soap to last us at least into next year, but I'm still cranking it out LOL! Thus the need to give it away. I have curbed it down from what I...

Lard and beef tallow combined : which proportions?

I'd say 50% lard, 25% tallow 20% coconut and 5% castor...that's pretty much all hard oils there though (except for the castor) so I wouldn't wait long to cut.

Butterfly swirl attempt = massive fail

Like Rhonda said, it might not be a butterfly swirl, but definitely not a fail! If you had not mentioned that it was supposed to be a butterfly swirl, then no one would have been the wiser. :-)
