would vaseline soap be too soft?

I added baby oil (about 3-4%) to a batch once. My sister ask me to try it. It was a simple soap, Olive oil, coconut oil, lard, and a little castor, SF around 7%. It worked fine, although it too forever to cure and she loved the soap. No fragrance or color added. She said it was like a bit...

What are some simple starter swirls?

I agree, the 'in to post swirl' is super easy and it looks pretty cool....I have to fight the urge to stir too much once I pour my colored portion sometimes.

    Peak Coconut Milk color

I used it a couple of years ago, the soap was a creamy off white. The scent was GONE at first, but as it cured it came back, mild, but there. I found a bar of it last spring, still creamy off white and I could still smell the mild scent.

    Distilled Water

I have well water, and I'm lucky that it's very soft and pure. I make soap with tap water all the time with no problems. Go for it!

Tested my new cutter tonight - best $2 ever

I've seen cutters at the thrift store several times, but I never came up with the idea to use it to cut soap. BRILLIANT!!!

Using Raw Egg in Soap making

I've never HP'ed egg soap, but I have made CP. I used egg yolks, not the whites. I tempered the beaten egg yolks with some of the warm oils and added that very slowly to the oil lye mixture, mixing well with a spoon. I soaped with really cool temps to try to keep from having scrambled egg...

    Breast Milk Soap

I was planning on CP but am toying with the HP option now. I make a 'just for me' soap and do HP cause I don't care what it looks like. I have yet to make a pretty HP. But since this is going to be 'just for baby' I don't think it matters.

    Holiday candy from Bramble berry

I just got an order yesterday from BB and I got a sample bottle of it too. Like Pink, my bottle was 1/2 full.....it smells like wine to me. I think if I use it, I will mix with something, peppermint would be great.

    Breast Milk Soap

Great suggestion Scouter. I always freeze any sort of milk (goats milk, coconut milk) when making soap to avoid the yucky burn. I usually do the 50/50 method....half the liquid water and lye, then cool and add slushy frozen milky stuff. With breast milk I don't think I would want to dilute...

    Breast Milk Soap

I just found out my only daughter is going to make me a grandmother. (her first) She has requested that I make a mothers milk soap, just for her baby, after she gives birth. I was always sort of on the fence with making breast milk soap, have never attempted it, but now that my daughter has...

Bars made with new mold get a D-

I pop mine in the freezer too. It makes a lot of difference with how the soap looks when it's unmolded. It seems to give a smoother look.

    Reusing kitchen fat

I've never done it, but my mom did. She used all her used canola oil, she cleaned somehow with boiling water and filtered it (I'm not sure of her exact cleaning process). Her soap recipe included lard and coconut oil and a few coffee grounds to make it scrubby. It made a nice kitchen and...

    Aloe Vera: Real or Hype

I've used it and couldn't really tell any difference in the soap. It soaped pretty easy with no problems.

    Has anyone used savonscents??

I've ordered from them a couple of times. The SOS Baby Powder is really strong, I love the Butt Naked but in SOS strength it became very light--should have went with ultra, it soaped like a dream. The Jamaca me crazy scent is another one that was super strong in the SOS strength, soaped great...

    Cold process transparent soap

There is a transparent soap method outlined in Susan Cavitch's book The Soapmakers Companion. It involves using a sugar syrup, glycerin, and ethanol (Everclear). I've never tried it, it seems a little complicated and I'm not too keen on using ethanol around an open flame. (translation---I'm...

    One I've been working on

The tape really didn't stick too well to the underside of the soap. I was sure to cut the bars as straight as possible and lay them flat, tape side down. The red soap was at a really thick trace and that helped with any leaking soap, although some did leak out. When the red set up, I removed...

    One I've been working on

Thanks everyone! My log mold holds around 48 oz--I made a batch that was 24 oz, spilt it in two, scented and colored one with cocoa powder, and the other part with wreath green lab color. I put a divider down the middle of the mold and poured the brown and the green on either side--my husband...
