    Boys are dumb

I spent the day today teaching 3 teenage boys how to freedive for abalone and scallops off the Mendocino coast. After cleaning the shellfish and a ling we speared, one of them asked if there is any fat in the fish to make soap! A year or two ago I showed the same trio how to process a wild pig...

What happens to the bad stuff in animal fat once saponified?

Exactly my point. The vaccines are gone, the antibiotics are in such a minute amount they have no measurable effect and maybe the hormones are lingering. Still, Id like to see a solid study.

What happens to the bad stuff in animal fat once saponified?

I would love to see some in depth studies on what is suspended in animal fat. I cant imagine an organization willing to pay for a study that actually measures how many micrograms of antibiotics, growth hormones and vaccines are in a kilogram of animal fat. Along with that, which of these...

My first shaving soap is a success!

Im going to put my next batch into sticks after reading this. Still, I love how the stuff has hardened up nicely, especially the lanolin and tallow ones. Time to strop. So after 5 weeks of shaving with this recipe along with a beef tallow addition and a lanolin addition in separate...

Shaving Soap - Want to Make It?

I completely agree. Im a noob to this site and have been using a straight for 5 years. The shave soaps I made a few years ago that called for clay were terrible. No cushion, no lasting lather, just slick due to expensive mud:wink:. Ive never purchased a decent shaving soap that had clay in...

HP shave soap Q's, wet shavers in the house.

If the recipe is from the first shaving soap is a success thread, Ive made the same one. I had a drying shave the day after I made it but that could be from not using enough water or because it had not cured at all. That was about a week ago. I shaved with that soap yesterday and had a superb...

    Hardness in use

Such an educational post! Thank you! Lastingness(?) has always been elusive to me other than utilizing a long cure. I pulled out a tallow, coconut and olive oil bar from 3 motnhs ago and it was excellent. Ive let other recipes cure this long and maybe I just didnt appreciate the mildness and...

My first shaving soap is a success!

They are the only straights in my rotation now. On the weekends when I have more free time, a long, luxurious shave with one of these is my spa treatment. Definite edge play.

    Man scrub

I make a hand bar with coffee grinds for when I get home from work, I am a male, and I use it daily. My gf does think its a bit scratchy but it does clean very well.

My first shaving soap is a success!

I really enjoy the myriad of preferences we all have. Ive always preferred harder soaps than croaps and creams. I like watching the hard bar mutate into a creamy, puffy lather on my brush. Due to that preference Im pretty pleased that these stearic/coco soaps will get hard. I thought I may...

    First HPCP and questions

No noticeable difference to me lathered up or not. My nose though is not all that sensitive.

    First HPCP and questions

The baby oil was only used to line the PVC mold to ease removal. I would have used plain mineral oil but I was out. All the oils were melted together in the crock pot. Lye solution was added and I switched back and forth between a stick blender and hand stirring. This crock pot tends...

    First HPCP and questions

I thought HPCP meant hot process crock pot. The baby oil ingredients say mineral oil and fragrance, which could be vanilla. Thanks all.

My first shaving soap is a success!

Yeah, these are 200g batches, so I have 5 of them now. More than enough. My MdC lasts me almost a year and I use it 3-5 times a week. I dont expect these batches to be that long lasting..... Too impatient to let them cure. Now if I get these beard growing faster
