Low foam, low streak soap for cleaning windows?

Even on the outside of the windows? We are talking about fine dust and grit, not fingerprints and I would have thought it might scratch with paper?

Low foam, low streak soap for cleaning windows?

I was wondering if you could advise on a suitable soap recipe for cleaning windows without leaving streaks? I am needing to clean the equivalent of about 30 standard external windows. The dirt is country dust rather than city/vehicle grease. I asked the window cleaning suppliers what was the...

    RIP Bamix... not all steel!

Well well... looks like Bamix Customer Support are keen to help get it back on its feet. Apparently while all current models of Bamix have Aluminium cutter guards, they used to do a special edition model and have some spare "chromed Aluminium" guards left and are shipping me one right now. The...

    RIP Bamix... not all steel!

Cheers folks - the poor Bamix is looking so sad... grey and dull and smelly too! At least it had a good life in the kitchen, most recently for grinding up rolled naked barley for making digestive biscuits.

    RIP Bamix... not all steel!

I just killed a perfectly good Bamix making household soap! I had no idea but my specific Bamix had an aluminium cutterguard. A few seconds into blending a small batch of Coconut/KOH household soap I saw the grey streaks appearing in the soap. I took it out and the cutterguard went black before...

My first shaving soap is a success!

Well as promised, here is a picture and review of my first shaving soap batch. It was a resounding success and has resulted in the exile of several tubs of Proraso to the local charity shop. I based the proportions in the recipe to match the guide on Lee's Silver Fox 1.0 blog. Many thanks, Lee...

My first shaving soap is a success!

I don't think it really matters. Some folks roll the soap in parchment and cut it into pucks, slice and air-dry. Others put it onto tubs and leave the top on. Providing the soap passes the zap test (and if you measured everything accurately and cooked for more than 30 mins, it should), it seems...

    UK source of Na4-EDTA?

It is in the main shaving soap thread... http://www.soapmakingforum.com/showthread.php?t=34264 I haven't posted pics of my batch yet but I made the 45% SA, 25% CO, 20% Tallow, 5% Shea, 5% Lanolin, KOH recipe. Additives were 11% Glycerin, 0.5% EDTA and 3% EO (Lavender, Rosemary, Wild Mint)

    UK source of Na4-EDTA?

Yes thanks, I got some from the eBay seller since they were honest about its quality. It seems fine apart from some absorbed water causing it to clump a little. I didn't have any issues with it but time will tell how it performs. In fact I will use the shaving soap tomorrow so will find out how...

My first shaving soap is a success!

I want to offer a huge thanks to everyone that has contributed to this thread over the years. I have ploughed through the posts, scribbled notes, bought a crockpot and made a batch today. So far as I can tell just from staring at it in its little pots as it cools, it worked perfectly. Zapless...

Things NOT to stir your HP soaps with...

I wonder if it was the heat, the lye or the fats? I could easily boil them in water, soak them in a bit of lye and stir a spare bit of cooking oil with them to see what brought it out. Given that they are sold for cooking not soaping, I would suspect the lye.

Things NOT to stir your HP soaps with...

Heh - I had a bit of a surprise when I tried to use a brand new set of high-temperature silicone spatulas to stir a crockpot of raw shaving soap... the dye in the spatula came out into the soap! I had just added the lye and was slowly stirring to a soft paste when I needed to put the spatulas...

My first shaving soap is a success!

Thanks for looking that up. I know the local CP soap shop in Scotland uses it in their hand-soaps when they can get it. Part of their business model is to source oils locally so at the moment it is off the menu so to speak, but we can easily get it online from elsewhere.

    UK source of Na4-EDTA?

I would rather not. At least I can use the ebay UK seller now I know what to expect from the product. Given that a shaving soap batch only uses a few grams, the 100g baggie will last me ages, especially if I make some 50% stock up and store the rest.

    UK source of Na4-EDTA?

Thanks but now Mistralni state on their main page they do not sell to individuals.

    UK source of Na4-EDTA?

I have just had an informative chat with one of the UK-based sellers on eBay about the tetrasodium EDTA. I asked what made up the rest of the ">84% EDTA" in his listing, whether it was simply absorbed water or if it was blended with something. He very quickly replied that I was correct and it...

    Greetings from Scotland

I have picked up a small barista milk foaming jug in SS for mixing lye. It will be KOH first for a HP shaving soap. All I am short of at the moment in the kitchen are small storage pots for the finished product so I will be looking at PP plastic tubs with lids. It is only for my own use of...

    UK source of Na4-EDTA?

It is actually interesting and worthwhile hearing about the opinions on soap additives. I don't mind the discussion. In this specific case, I was considering the tetrasodium EDTA for helping reduce soap scum in a shaving soap so that it might not clog brushes so much. I am more than happy to...

    UK source of Na4-EDTA?

I did find some ebay sellers offering tetra-sodium edta in small amounts from 50g but it was relatively low purity (86%) when compared to the commercial stuff (100%). I suspect a lot of the difference will be water but I will avoid ebay for now.

    UK source of Na4-EDTA?

Those listings are for the di-sodium edta... I believe we need the tetra-sodium edta for our soaps but I will have a look at those sellers to see if they have the correct item. Cheers.
