    0.1 digital scale recommendations

I looked up digital scale recommendations on this forum and the main one that shows up is the KD8000 which only weighs to the gram. I'd love to get a scale that measures to the centigram (0.01g) but it really isn't necessary no matter what I'm measuring, but I think decigram (0.1g) accuracy is...

How to make TetraEDTA in 39% solution

Wow. Thank you so so much. My brain is fried. I've been crunching numbers for the last 3+ hours learning all kinds of things. Found myself needing to get solid grip on SAP values which led me on a looptyloop with what I'm sure are typos on someones website trying to explain it which led me all...

How to make TetraEDTA in 39% solution

Oooh I want to test! I have Di and the Tetra's ETA is 1/7. I can send you some DiEDTA if you'd like. I'd love to return the favor of you answering all my pokey questions. Gonna keep an eye out for your call to action!

How to make TetraEDTA in 39% solution

I probably have no business trying all this, but it's fun. I have 2 questions. 1. Do you think KOH will work to convert the DiEDTA to TetraEDTA? (And if so, do I need to discount EDTA because of my 90% purity of KOH? Or is that so tiny it doesn't matter.) 2. And just in reference to reading your...

    Vegan Palm Free Soap

I don't sell soap but I if I were to buy it I'd avoid palm oil and I don't make soap with it either. This is one of the many articles online about it. https://www.ecowatch.com/why-is-palm-oil-so-bad-1881907014.html It became such an issue there are certification organizations now for...

    Vegan Palm Free Soap

Haha me too! I spend hours on calc formulating recipes. It's actually pretty tricky without palm and animal fats which actually forced me to learn a lot of the properties of oils and their acids. This one of favorite so far. Love the lather of it. SF 5%. In the past on this forum I got a...

    Is my KOH 90%?

Thank you for replying! I was just about to try heating the paste back up to add the KOH. Ok, I will add the KOH after dilution like you said. I was going to dilute the paste in small amounts in mason jars so 5g KOH (the total amount needed for the whole batch) divided into small batches...

    soleseife soap fail!

I tried the rock shape idea from SaltedFig. The rest is confetti, implants(?), rebatch. This first pic has bigger rocks. Each close the weight of a standard bar. This 2nd pic has smaller rocks (penny for size). Maybe not that useful, but maybe as decoration sitting on a toilet tank?

    soleseife soap fail!

I used Soapmaking friend calc which I learned last night making this soap that it has a flaw in it. (as Dawni knows!) When you put in any additive but choose "add with liquid" it discounts the water! even oatmeal or clay or anything! I only realized this after I'd measured everything out and was...

    soleseife soap fail!

Here's my recipe and picture of my resulting failure. I was so proud of my swirl-in-the-pot technique I tried too. What a bummer. So I've read I can't re-batch brine soap. Someone suggested shaving it up and putting it in a shaker bottle for washing hands, but I have my lovely proudly handmade...

    Is my KOH 90%?

Ok thank you so much for this info! This is only my 3rd or 4th attempt at making LS and all the previous times turned out clear. Out of those few, I don't remember any zappiness and I always calculated at 90% because soapcalc had no other option where in soapmaking friend calc you can change it...

    Is my KOH 90%?

Oh no gosh your right. I mean that I should've run the numbers through a calc with my own KOH and not assume anything. In this case though I'm quite certain she (IrishLass who is the recipe maker) knows exactly what she's doing and I'm the one who doesn't! I just ran it all through the...

    Is my KOH 90%?

Ok I'll do that. Thank you both for your advise!

How to make TetraEDTA in 39% solution

Thank you DeeAnna for answering my question! I'm so glad I asked. I thought it was like bread hydration where the EDTA was 39% of the water. I've never dealt with EDTA and from what I've read so far, it sounds like a great thing to put into all soaps. I have really hard water here in LA so it...

How to make TetraEDTA in 39% solution

I've already learned from reading other posts that I can not use EDTA Disodium in place of Tetradisodium EDTA. I'm going to order Tetrasodium EDTA and return the Disodium EDTA. But I noticed it comes in dry form. The recipe I'm using calls for "Tetra EDTA in 39% solution". I just wanted to make...

    Is my KOH 90%?

I was going to ask about this today too as I've started making IrishLass's creamy liquid soap recipe. My KOH says 84%-92%. The recipe doesn't specify but I'm assuming 90%. Do you think my KOH will do ok for any 90% KOH recipe?

    adulterated olive oil!

Thank you all for your feedback! I know I've seen on lists that Costco's organic evoo is real. Now I feel safe getting either Costco's (Kirkland) organic evoo or Kirkland regular olive oil. I always try to buy organic, but the price will probably determine this one! I'll also try using Rice bran...

    adulterated olive oil!

Dear Soapers, I learned several years ago that many brands of olive oils out there are in fact fraudulently labeled "extra-virgin" or not even all olive oil, often cut with cheaper oils. The fraud spreads through domestic and imported Italian olive oils too. If you don't already know about it...

Slow trace, cure time, and sodium lactate

Thank you so much for the suggested recipes! I'm going to try the recipe without the coco butter like you say exactly. I'm very much looking forward to this recipe because I noticed that when I plugged it into the calculator (soapmakingfriend), some of the "recipe properties" are outside of the...

Slow trace, cure time, and sodium lactate

I'm trying to form a CP recipe that will be slow trace and won't take more than 4-6 weeks to cure. I'm aiming for a rich, conditioning bar to put into a sea sponge. I think I'm confused about "unsaturated" not necessarily meaning "liquid" oils? I'm now noticing that I'm being advised to use "60%...
