SMF February 2021 Challenge - Circling Taiwan Swirl

Thanks so much for sharing all this information! I'm really interested in natural colorants and your soap is just inspiring. I am going to have to try rhubarb for sure! I too am very curious to find out if it turns brown.

SMF February 2021 Challenge - Circling Taiwan Swirl

@Vicki C, those colors are amazing! Would you please tell me about that red in your naturally colored swirl? Was that the anatto? Rhubarb? Does it stay that color over time? Both your recently posted soaps are truly lovely.

Principles for developing a recipe (and technique) for swirling?

Are there good rules to follow in developing a recipe, and managing your batter, to be used for swirls? I'm hoping to enter this month's challenge and want a good approach. I'd like to know rules, rather than actual recipes, so I can tailor to oils on hand, and my own preferences about oils to...

With the right stamp, you can stamp cured soap

@glendam, just want to say your stamp is beautiful!

With the right stamp, you can stamp cured soap

Have you tried OnShape? It's is a free online CAD software that's pretty powerful. I'm sure it has a draft feature, although I haven't used it yet. If you get stuck I can try figuring it out and share what I learn--I actually used to design plastic parts for a living, which all require draft to...

Crayons for color - experiment results

Update: I've been using the purple, which had faded/morphed to a pale peachy color. Well, it turns out that's only on the outside! The more I use it the more it returns to a beautiful shade of purple. So...something about lye + crayons becomes sensitive to air? I'll have to go ahead and slice...

    Looking for scraper technique tips

I recently made a soap using scrapers to contour layers for the first time. The design called for some pointy "V's". I found it was easy enough to make V channels, but making Vs that stood up were another story. When the batter was thinner, the points just slumped down. However, as the batter...

Crayons for color - experiment results

I don't sell, and with these cautions from you folks. I won't even give these away. I do feel comfortable trying it on myself, since crayons are sold to children and safety-approved for ingestion, and, I would imagine, for coloring all over one's body...but then again, not necessarily for...

Crayons for color - experiment results

I made some sample soaps trying out Crayola crayons for color. Here are the results: at pour, 2 days, 3 days, 24 days, 39 days, and ~7.5 months. Top row left to right used green and blue-green crayons; middle row was a dark red and blue; last row is red and purple. You can see the actual crayon...

What soapy thing have you done today?

I think that is just delightful! Something about it feels playful and made me smile.

What soapy thing have you done today?

I am over the moon--I just cut the prototype of my over-ambitious Valentine's day design (figured I was likely to sacrifice an entire loaf if I didn't start small) and I PULLED IT OFF! Of course now I wish I had gone for the real whole thing, because I'll have my hands full all weekend doing...

What soapy thing have you done today?

Happy to be doing soap-related things on day one of 2021! I'm determined not to fail to make a holiday soap NEXT year. So this morning with a winter theme in mind, I did a few firsts: designed snowflake cutouts and made them on the 3d printer, and used soap dough with my clay extruder with...

What soapy thing have you done today?

It's been a 2-day soap-fest here. Yesterday I designed and then 3D printed a soap mold; my first real project with this printer and super exciting. While the print ran, I made transparent melt and pour soap base for the first time! More excitement! And today I got to melt some of my melt and...

    how much shrinkage to expect

I'm embarking on what's probably an over-ambitious project, involving making a custom mold, and making my own M&P soap base for the first time, and tinting it, and embedding the molded result in CP soap. Anyway, in planning this I would like to know how much, if at all, I should expect the...

    scrapers and timing

Last night I used my new 3d printer to make scrapers for a design idea. First use of it for soap, and that's what I bought it for! Super excited! But also nervous. The design includes some pretty deep slots and up-standing points. I will need each layer to set up pretty well before I do the...

    Ghost swirl came out backwards!

@Catscankim thank you! I'm enchanted by the technique too and will definitely do it again.

    Ghost swirl came out backwards!

@Catscankim, I BUTCHERED the cut, and have rhombuses instead of bars. *sigh* But I'll post these anyway so you can see the middle layer exposed by the cut (this was cut horizontally--except for the one I accidentally did the wrong way--*sigh* again.)

    Ghost swirl came out backwards!

I have--it goes all the way through--not soda ash. I was wondering about that too...
